eHomily  by Pastor Ron...

The Apostle John in Heaven said: "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away..." (Revelation 21:1).  This verse reminds us that this earth, as we know it, will not last forever.  Jesus said, "Heaven and earth will pass away but my words will not pass away" (Matthew 24:35).

One day, according to the Apostle Peter, this world will be purged by fire (2 Peter 3:10).  The inner core of the earth is molten heat-a seething, boiling lake of fire.  It is like a gigantic bomb, stored with fire, and one day God will light the fuse.  Scientists say it began with a big bang.  Well, scripture says one day it's going out in the big burn.  This world which was created by God will one day be cremated by God.  But then God will create a new Heaven and a new Earth.

Now here's the interesting part:  It will be a new earth and, yet, it will be the same earth.  God's Word promises this earth will endure forever (Psalm 119:90).  The new earth will be a purged earth.  It will not be a new planet because that's not the way God planned it.  It will be a new creation in the same way that you are new a creation.  Paul says, "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, the new has come" (2 Corinthians 5:17).  And, of course, our salvation and transformation will reach its consummation when we all get to Heaven.  Paul says, "...We will all be changed-In a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.  For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will all be changed" (1 Corinthians 15:51-52).

Since conversion I'm the same me, yet, I'm a new me.  In the day of the consummation of my salvation, I will still be me and yet a new me.  Or think of it this way-I will one day get a new body.  It will be a new body yet it will be the same body.  You will be able to look at me and know it's me (though improved-I hope) but it will still be me.  I will know even as I'm known and you will be known even as you know (1 Corinthians 13:12).

In the same way, there will one day be a new earth, but it will still be earth.  It will be a new earth (literally "made new" earth).  Think of earth as being not so much obliterated or annihilated but rehabilitated.  It is made as new by the One who makes all things new.  Personally, I look forward to seeing this "made new" earth without the disease, disaster, decadence and death.  I like to think of the beauty of this earth without the ugly scar of sin.  And we will enjoy this new earth (and Heaven) forever and ever.  Amen!

Have a Blessed Day,
