There was no more prominent religious figure in America during the 18th century Great Awakening than George Whitefield.  He was known for his "open air" (outdoor) crusades across the American frontier and in town squares which dotted the eastern coastal regions from New England to the southern most colonies.  Crowds would gather by the thousands and Whitefield's voice would boom out and, though predating amplification systems, could still be heard by the most distant listeners.  There were, of course, hundreds of thousands of converts under the preaching of Whitefield and the convicting work of the Holy Spirit in this period known by historians as The Great Awakening.

One prominent attendee to these preaching gatherings on occasion was none other than Benjamin Franklin.  As you probably know, he was not a Christian but a deist by profession of faith.  He believed the deity created everything but pretty much left the world to run by itself.  He (and others) compared this concept to winding up a clock and then letting it run on its own. Though Franklin was not a Christian, he possessed a great respect for Christianity and was particularly fond of Whitefield.  He was fascinated by his oratorical skills, religious fervor, and amiable personality.  So he was known sometimes to attend and listen to the sermons of the well-known evangelist.

One day Benjamin Franklin received a letter from Whitefield in which he said to the great inventor and statesman the following:

"I find that you grow more and more famous in the learned world...As you have made such progress in investigating the mysteries of electricity, I now humbly urge you to give diligent heed to the mystery of the new birth.  It is a most important and interesting study and, when mastered, will richly repay you for your pains."

I do not know of any historical record which claims that Franklin ever came to Christ but I do know that Whitefield was right.  It does "richly repay" to wholly receive the teaching of Christ on the new birth.  If you have never given "diligent heed" to this truth, I would highly recommend that you do so.  I would also welcome an opportunity to have this conversation with you.  Let me know if you would like to talk about what it means to be born again.  And if you know, indeed, that you have been born again then maybe it's time to have a conversation with a friend close to you.  Jesus did with Nicodemus.  What's true of Jesus should be true of us.  Maybe it's time to have a conversation with a friend...

See you Sunday as we begin our study of Heaven!
