One of many recent decisions we have made at Diabetes Partnership of Cleveland was to change the name of this newsletter. We wanted this publication to simply express what we plan to accomplish as your local go-to source for diabetes information and assistance. The new name, managing diabetes. together. says so much about our goal to help you manage diabetes as a team.

As a part of your team, we offer several educational opportunities throughout the year for you to learn better ways toward healthy living. This month, we are offering a series of free classes on nutrition. Each Tuesday afternoon, a member of our experienced team of diabetes health professionals will offer a different topic on healthy eating. Perhaps you want to learn how to eat healthy meals when you're in a restaurant. Or you are overwhelmed by food choices when you go to the grocery store. Next month, our Tuesday afternoon classes will focus on the medical management of diabetes, such as glucose monitoring, medications, and preventing complications. These classes can help you. Be sure to register ahead of time by calling 216-591-0800.

Let us help you stay focused on your health. We are one part of your health team, and we are here for one reason: to help manage diabetes. together.

Type 1 Diabetes: A Family Takes

Control

Dan Finkenthal, RN is relatively new to Diabetes Partnership of Cleveland. He came on-board the organization as its newest nurse educator this past January. Diabetes, however, is not new to Dan. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 18 years old. At that time, he knew nothing about the disease and didn't know anyone else living with it until his brother was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at

age 40.

In March, Dan's nine year-old daughter Sammi was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, too. Though Dan and his wife Marlene, also a registered nurse, knew medically what to do for Sammi, it was still a shock to their family. "It just was a little too close," he said. Click here to read more about Dan and Sammi.

Local Boy Scout Gives Back to Camp Ho Mita Koda

Eric Pohle, a student at Solon High School, never forgot his special summer at Camp Ho Mita Koda. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was just two years old, Eric spent time at camp when he was five. Though he did not return to Camp Ho Mita Koda after that summer, he remembers how much he enjoyed his time as a camper.

Since that time at camp, Eric has become very involved with the Boy Scouts. He became a Boy Scout when he was in the fifth grade and has dedicated much of his time to his troop. Now 17 years old, he is well on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank a Boy Scout can achieve. In order to obtain this honor, however, he must spend several hours on a service project that demonstrates leadership. Eric wanted to do a service project that had meaning and that would make a difference to others. Using his diabetes as an inspiration and remembering the impact that Camp Ho Mita Koda had on his young life, Eric decided to find a way to help the camp. "Though I hadn't been to camp in years, the place really meant something to me," he said. "Even at five years old, I thought it was a special place." Click here to read more about Eric's project and find out what he did for Camp Ho Mita Koda.
