Helen M. Dumski, MA, RD, LD/President & CEO
It is hard to believe that just a few weeks ago, we were welcoming in the New Year with promises to ourselves in the forms of resolutions. Many of us promised to take better care of ourselves: eat healthier foods, exercise more, visit our doctors regularly, get enough sleep. Most people make too many resolutions to keep, and it becomes easier to fall back into old comfortable routines. It's no surprise that by this time of year, most resolutions have been forgotten.
At first, resolutions may sound simple to do, but making lifestyle changes take time, patience, and in some cases, guidance. That's where the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland can help you. Do you need help planning healthy meals this year or have you promised yourself you'll learn more about what's in the foods you buy at the grocery store? Our diabetes educators are here to answer your questions about meal-planning and nutrition labels. Are you looking to put more exercise in your life? Ask our diabetes educators how exercise can help you manage your diabetes. Are you more motivated to make lifestyle changes when you have the support of a group? Sign up for one of our free diabetes education programs at select YMCA locations.
The truth is resolutions can be made anytime of year. Pick one or two small changes you would like to make towards a healthier life. They don't have to be big to have an impact on your health. You owe it to yourself to have a happy, healthy new year all year.

Protect Your Kidneys, Save Your Heart
World Kidney Day is a series of events held each year to teach people around the world the importance of our kidneys to our overall health. The goal is to reduce kidney disease and other health problems associated with the disease. This year's event in Cleveland, organized by the Kidney Foundation of Ohio, will focus on the important link between Chronic Kidney Disease and Cardiovascular Disease. Diabetes and high blood pressure are key risk factors for Chronic Kidney Disease.
The Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland will offer free screenings for diabetes Thursday, March 10 from 11:00 am-1:30 pm at the Cleveland State University Student Center. Other activities will include blood pressure screenings, exercise demonstrations and free giveaways.
Just as with diabetes, early diagnosis of Chronic Kidney Disease can delay or prevent the devastating complications associated with the disease. For further information, visit the Kidney Foundation of Ohio website or call 216-771-2700. |

Susan Norr Sunkle:
A Lifetime of DAGC and Camp Memories
In 2010, Camp Ho Mita Koda alumna Susan Norr Sunkle reached a
significant milestone -- 60 years of living well with type 1 diabetes. Although there have been many changes in the management and treatment of diabetes over the years, the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland (DAGC) has remained a constant in Susan's life. DAGC was founded just three years after Susan was diagnosed at age five. In fact, Susan's parents, Dubby and Norton Norr, were charter members of DAGC.Read more about the roles DAGC and camp played in the lives of Susan and her family.
