We are delighted to share the news that Crain's Cleveland Business recently chose two members of the DAGC "family" as 2009 Health Care Hero finalists.  These special individuals were nominated by their peers and selected by an independent panel of judges for the impact they have on the quality of our everyday lives.
As a registered dietetic technician and health educator at DAGC, MaryAnn Nicolay develops and implements diabetes education programs for diverse and underserved communities in Cleveland.  Her creative approach and genuine concern for those in need of diabetes education has earned her respect among her peers and those she serves.  We are so proud of her!
Our Board member, Dr. Jeffrey Schelling, is the director of the division of nephrology and hypertension at MetroHealth System and a professor of medicine at CWRU.  Besides his efforts to stop the rise of kidney disease and its factors, Dr. Schelling's work involves looking at the needs of indigent patients.  This is a well-deserved honor!
The diabetes educators at DAGC are everyday heroes to those meeting the daily challenges of diabetes.  What exactly IS a diabetes educator?  A diabetes educator is a healthcare professional who assists people with or at risk for diabetes.  Using extensive training, knowledge and skills in biology, communication and education, diabetes educators teach people how to self-manage their diabetes and modify their behaviors for better health.  Each weekday during regular business hours, one of our three diabetes educators is available to answer your phone calls or make an appointment for a diabetes risk assessment or to discuss your diabetes health situation.
Self-management is the key component to overall good health, and a diabetes educator is an essential part of a person's diabetes health team.  These professionals certainly are "heroes" to those with diabetes.  Congratulations to Dr. Schelling and to all of our diabetes educator heroes who are there for others each day-MaryAnn Nicolay, Tammy Randall and Dyhann Rhodes.

10th Anniversary African American Family Reunion
This year marks the 10th anniversary of DAGC's successful FamilyAfrican American family Reunion Project.  Each year, DAGC receives requests for diabetes information to hand out at numerous family reunions and picnics held throughout the summer.  The majority of these requests come from the African American community.
In response to these requests, the Family Reunion Project was developed 10 years ago to promote diabetes awareness within the African American Community.  Families receive diabetes awareness packets filled with helpful information and fun give-aways. Since 2000, DAGC has distributed 22,666 reunion packets, reaching 71,172 people.

Thank You, Beta Theta Pi Fraternity!
Beta Theta Pi fraternityIn April, the Lambda Kappa-Beta chapter of Beta Theta Pi fraternity at Case Western Reserve University held its 24th annual Walk-A-Thon in memory of fraternity brother Steven P. Arnold, who died in 1985 of diabetes-complicated heart disease. This year's event raised $2,314 and drew more than 50 participants, making it one of the best turn-outs ever.  Money raised from the Steven P. Arnold Walk-A-Thon goes into a diabetes education fund at the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland established in Steven's memory.  Since 1986, the brothers of Beta Theta Pi have raised more than $52,000 from the Walk-A-Thon.  Thank you!
