DAGC Dialogue Helen M. Dumski, MA, RD, LD /President & CEO
The saying goes that good things come in small packages. That sentiment couldn't be more fitting for
the staff of the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland. At our weekly staff
meetings, I am amazed at the far-reaching effects our DAGC staff of 15 has
in Northeast Ohio. We're in your neighborhoods
conducting education seminars and free diabetes risk assessments; we're
teaching children how to live with diabetes while enjoying a memorable camp
experience; we're supporting local diabetes researchers in their quest for
answers; and we're raising diabetes awareness and vital funds for the people in
our community affected by diabetes. In just a few weeks the 24th Annual Verizon Wireless Swim for Diabetes--our major fundraiser of the year--will be coming to a
swimming pool near you. Coordinated by Lori Izeman, DAGC's Director of Development and Communications, she and her team have been planning this year's Swim for almost a
year--and the details are many. They have been lining up the 70 pools, assigning pool leaders and
volunteers, securing Swim sponsors, and organizing the awards and prizes for
almost 1,000 participants. Orchestrating the Verizon Wireless Swim for Diabetes takes enormous teamwork. Thanks to the DAGC staff, Board and Development Committee members who have contributed to this effort. I look forward to another successful Swim and your continued support.

Evaluate Your Plate . . . March is National Nutrition Month
Good nutrition is the cornerstone to a healthy lifestyle, and reaching for a balanced diet is especially important for those with diabetes. Diabetes affects the way the body uses the food you eat. What you eat and how much you eat will affect your diabetes control, even hours after you've left the table. Learning how food affects blood glucose is important in controlling your diabetes. Click here to learn more. |
Make a Splash...Wet or Dry!
This year marks the 24th annual Swim for Diabetes presented by Verizon Wireless. About 1,000 people from all over Northeast Ohio will be swimming, walking and participating in water aerobics at 70 pools throughout the area April 3, 4 and 5. And people don't have to get wet to participate! Many people walk around the pools or simply collect donations to help their friends and family members with diabetes. One hundred percent of all monies raised stays right here in Northeast Ohio.
Prizes, Prizes, PRIZES! There are all sorts of prizes available depending on how much you raise. The Grand Prize winner will be able to throw out the Ceremonial First Pitch at Swim for Diabetes Night with the Cleveland Indians on June 17. Click here to see more prizes, read about volunteer opportunities and find a pool location near you. | |

FREE Community Education Program
Healthy Restaurant Eating: Tips and Tactics for Success
Despite the state of the economy, Americans still eat out
more than ever. Eating in
restaurants, though, does not mean one cannot make good nutritional choices
while dining out. Hope Warshaw, a nationally-known expert on healthy restaurant
eating as well as a dietitian and diabetes educator, will discuss healthy
restaurant eating tips at a free community education program Wednesday, March
25 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at South Pointe Hospital. Ms. Warshaw will share practical, realistic
guidelines from her book Eat Out, Eat Right for people with diabetes to
make healthier menu choices from a wide variety of foods and cuisines. Registration is required by March 20.
Register by phone at 216-591-0800 or online at www.dagc.org. |
