DELTA TO EXPAND PREMIUM ECONOMY OFFERINGS

delta logoDelta Air Lines plans by this summer to introduce an international premium economy product. Economy Comfort seats would account for the "first few rows" of the coach cabin on 160 aircraft, offering four more inches of legroom and 50 percent more recline than standard international economy seats. Economy passengers would pay an additional $80 to $160 each way, though Delta plans to provide free or discounted access to full-fare economy passengers and elite-level frequent flyer program members. Meanwhile, United Airlines next year will begin expanding its premium economy seating to Continental Airlines, including all mainline aircraft and some larger regional aircraft.

THE MEXICAN PARADOX

successful meetingsIn 2010, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, the economy in Mexico grew by 5.5%, the fastest rate in a decade. The Mexican peso appreciated against the dollar. Inflation was essentially flat. Foreign reserves rose to $113 billion. Twenty-two million tourists visited the country. Trade with the U.S. reached an all-time high of nearly $400 billion. In Ciudad Juarez, one of the most affected cities, the maquiladora industries added some 20,000 jobs. The percentage of the population living below the poverty line declined to 47.4% in 2008 from 63.7% a decade earlier. Life expectancy continues to rise to near-First World levels. In Mexico City, home to some 20 million people, the murder rate actually fell over the last decade. In 2009, it was about one quarter of the rate in Washington, D.C.

NO NEW RIVIERA MAYA AIRPORT

TulumPlans for a second international airport in the Riviera Maya region of Mexico appear to be grounded indefinitely. The country's Ministry of Communications and Transportation said bids to develop the airport near Tulum, about 100 miles south of Cancun, did not comply with security standards required by national and international regulations for the operation of airports. The ministry did not say if or when the bidding process for the $255 million airport project could or would be relaunched. Bidders included mining company Grupo Mexico and airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste, which operates Cancun Airport and eight other facilities in southeastern Mexico.
Currently the Riviera Maya is served by Cancun Airport.
