 CONTINENTAL - UNITED MERGER

United-ContinentalStar Alliance partners United Airlines and its US rival Continental Airlines have agreed a $3.2 billion merger to create the world's biggest carrier. The deal, which will result in savings of more than $1 billion a year, is likely to spark further consolidation in the global airline industry. The combined group will adopt the United Airlines name with Continental CEO Jeff Smisek heading the company. The two airlines, both part of the Star Alliance, currently fly 144 million passengers a year to 370 destinations in 59 countries worldwide. He added: "This combination brings together the best of both organizations and cultures to create a world-class airline with tremendous and enduring strengths. "Together, we will have the financial strength necessary to make critical investments to continue to improve our products and services and to achieve and sustain profitability.  "I look forward to working with the employees of both companies around the world, so our airline can become an even stronger global competitor, deliver sustainable profitability, achieve best-in-class customer service under our unified brand, create long-term career opportunities and deliver increased value for shareholders."

HOTEL BOCA CHICA - ACAPULCO

Boca ChicaAcapulco was Mexico's first - and perhaps best - beach resort location, and favourite destination of the 1950s Hollywood elite, who were attracted to its clear, turquoise waters, great nightlife and glamorous accommodation. Acapulco continues to reclaim its retro-glamour - this time at a midcentury modern hotel that appeared in the 1963 film with Elvis Presley, "Fun in Acapulco."Hotel Boca Chica - renowned for its elegance, excellent service and unbridled tropical luxury - was a magnet to the rich and famous, and hosted Frank Sinatra, John Wayne and, much later, Elton John. Newly reopened after an extensive refurbishment, the hotel is looking better than ever. The 36-room resort, on Peninsula de las Playas north of Acapulco Bay, offers Old Hollywood-era touches, including terrazzo floors, an amoeba-shaped pool and latticed brickwork.During the day, guests can snorkel, get a massage or explore La Roqueta, an island nature preserve. But it really comes alive after sundown. Keisuke Harada, formerly of Bond Street in New York City, runs the sushi bar. And Coco Wash, a disco, parties into the wee hours.  Rooms starting at $95.

CINCO DE MAYO

Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de mayo is a national holiday in Mexico.  While most people think it's Mexico's independence day (which is September 16th),  Mexico celebrates a victory over the French Army. Cinco de Mayo's history has its roots in the French Occupation of Mexico. The French occupation took shape in the aftermath of the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. With this war, Mexico entered a period of national crisis during the 1850's. Years of fighting the Americans and also a Civil War, had left Mexico devastated and bankrupt. On July 17, 1861, President Benito Juarez issued a moratorium in which all foreign debt payments would be suspended for a brief period of two years, with the promise that after this period, payments would resume.
The English, Spanish and French refused to allow president Juarez to do this, and instead decided to invade Mexico and get payments by whatever means necessary. The Spanish and English eventually withdrew, but the French refused to leave. In 1862, the French army began its advance. Under General Ignacio Zaragoza (who by the way was born in Goliad, in the Bahia del Espiritu Santo) 5,000 ill-equipped Mestizo and Zapotec Indians defeated the French army in what came to be known as the "Batalla de Puebla" on the fifth of May.
