Did you know most of Mexico is as safe as ever?

MexicoMexico is a big country and it's incredibly diverse, so violence along the US border won't have any effect on your program in, for example, the Mayan Riviera any more than an earthquake in California would affect people in Chicago. Most of the violence that has taken place recently is due to conflicts between drug cartels and the Mexican authorities. As a visitor, you are in little danger of having trouble as long as you follow common sense safety precautions. Mexico is, in general, a very safe country -- with the notable and news-making exception of Juarez and other border towns -- and has far less violent crime than any large U.S. city.

Safe Cities to Visit:

CANCUN, THE RIVIERA MAYA AND COZUMEL

Cancun is one of Mexico's most popular beach resorts, which averages around four million American visitors per year. Cancun is extremely safe. "The key to success when traveling or living abroad is exercising common sense." The Riviera Maya (the Yucatan coast stretching south from Cancun) has little to fear beyond sunburn.

PUERTO VALLARTA

The lovely cobble-stoned hillside fishing village,Puerto Vallarta, is safe to stroll. Thousands of Americans live here, and love it.

LOS CABOS

Thousands of Americans live here on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula (light years away from Tijuana's troubles) and the artsy little town of Todos Santos 45 minutes up the Pacific coast from Cabo San Lucas. The region is very safe, with good highways and busy downtowns.

Fliers: Be aware of new security

 security at airports
"Security lines subsided in the slower winter months. But airlines are starting to see increased demand in March as the economy recovers and spring vacations get underway," reports the AP.
Security lines are likely to grow again, said aviation expert Mark Kiefer of Charles River Associates.  Because full-body scans take slightly longer to go through than a simple metal detector, that can add up to longer waits when airports are busy, Kiefer said.  TSA says it doesn't believe the scanners will "significantly" increase the wait on security lines.
Still, AP notes some airlines are now suggesting that their customers arrive to the airport 75 minutes before domestic flights "and up to three hours ahead of an international flight."  Some fliers might be swabbed for explosives - even in gate areas.

Las Ventanas plans full-moon dinners

Las ventanasLas Ventanas al Paraiso, a Rosewood Resort in Los Cabos, is offering guests four-course, gourmet dinners on the beach during nights with a full moon. Tables for two are set up along the shoreline, separated by small, bamboo screens and wrought-iron sculptures of cacti. Large bonfires are set between the dining area and the sea, while live music is performed by the Hermanos de Luna, Las Ventanas' in-house guitar duo (whose name, coincidentally, means Brothers of the Moon). Individual telescopes and a star-and-planet guide are provided at each table.
Upcoming full-moon dinners are scheduled for April 28, May 27, June 26, July 26, Aug. 24, Sept. 23, Oct. 23, Nov. 21 and Dec. 21. Space is limited to six couples, and reservations are required.
