  • Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?: Eagle Rockers are stepping out on March 27. If you haven't heard about "Who's Coming to Dinner?" then we haven't been doing our job. I am pleased to report that we are receiving a lot of positive response to our "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" event planned for Saturday, March 27. One of the homes has already sold out and many others are beginning to fill up. The sooner you purchase your tickets, the better your chances are to be assigned to your favorite host selection. Act soon, don't be disappointed. Further information is provided later in this letter. You may also go to http://www.TERA90041.org for information and ticket purchase.

Fun, EZ Community Service Opportunity for Saturday, March 27: Looking for a way to earn community service hours? Meet and greet local leaders, business people and residents? Learn more about Eagle Rock and local issues that affect your community?Student volunteers are needed for a local fundraising event on Saturday, March 27, called "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?http://www.tera90041.org/GuessWhosComingtoDinner_press.htm," organized by The Eagle Rock Association (TERA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving and preserving the character of our town.

Students are needed to help with: A poolside reception (5-7 p.m.) or assisting at one of 18 private dinner parties in the neighborhood (7-10 p.m.). Volunteer assignments include event setup, flower arrangement, ticket sales, food service, and party clean-up. Bonus project for aspiring journalists/filmmakers: We need a video crew to document the evening's festivities. All assistance will be greatly appreciated and acknowledged. We'll strive to keep the workload light and fun, gladly provide proof of your service, and even invite you to join the festivities when your work is done. You'll also be invited back to an after-party to thank our volunteers and hosts.

If you're interested, please contact Mary Tokita (TERA Vice President and Volunteer Chair, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?) by Monday, March 1.

Public Meetings - Tell Us What You Want: One aspect of TERA's mission is to host community meetings on various topics. Historically, our most popular meetings have been the annual State of the Town meetings featuring our council representative. In the very near future we will plan our Spring Public Meeting. The board has already discussed several potential topics. Before we make a decision, I want to hear from you. What would you like the focus of the meeting to be? Email me at president@tera90041.org with your thoughts.

Occidental College Invitations: College President Jonathan Veitch stressed to me that he wants to further strengthen the bond between the Eagle Rock Community and Occidental College. He promised that one of the ways he intended to do that would be to invite the community to come on campus and share events that have an interest that goes beyond the boundaries of the campus. Later in this eLetter you will find him keeping his promise, inviting the community join the Oxy community to hear the world-renowned mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade.

A second invitation asks us to attend a lecture by New York City Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan. She will speak on her innovative approach to improving mobility and safety in one of the world's busiest cities. Eagle Rock abounds with opportunities for improvements in this area. I am confident she will discuss strategies and solutions that could have important and beneficial application in our town. I strongly encourage you to attend!

Child Care Center Threatened Closures: Rumors that childcare centers will be closed or consolidated by the City are running rampant. Community response to the potential closures has been immediate and passionate. In my relatively brief tenure as TERA President, I have not seen any reaction as strong as this one. Clearly, closing these centers would have an immediate and devastating impact on many families. I am trying to verify that a closure decision has been made, or is even being considered. It appears that the Council Office is still in the process of determining what is fact and what is fear. What is clear is that they understand the gravity of this issue.

We all know that Los Angeles is in a financially precarious situation. Budgets will be cut, some city services will be reduced or eliminated. The things we should hold our representatives accountable for is to ensure that the cuts are made in the right places and that Eagle Rock is treated fairly and not penalized more than other communities. Unfortunately, for the entire city of Los Angels, business as usual for the near future is not a realistic expectation. Let's hope that childcare can be preserved.

As soon as I know more about this issue, I will share it with you.

    Opera Star at Oxy

World-renowned mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade will perform at Occidental College -- her only Los Angeles appearance as part of her international farewell tour -- at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, in the College's Thorne Hall.

Described by the New York Times as "one of America's finest artists and singers," von Stade has sung with every leading American opera company and at top European opera houses such as La Scala, the Paris Opera, and the Vienna State Opera. She also has appeared in concert with the world's celebrated orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. Her recital at Occidental, where she will be joined on stage with pianist and composer Jake Heggie, will be her only Los Angeles appearance this season.

"It promises to be an absolutely exhilarating evening of song," said Irene Girton, a professor in Occidental's music department, of which she chairs. "Ms. von Stade is a stellar model of a modern singer - equally at home on the concert stage, at the opera, and in musical theater. She champions the music of living composers as well as the monuments of the past."

General admission tickets are $36.50, tickets for Occidental alumni, staff, faculty and administrators are $26.50, and tickets for students and seniors are $11.50. Tickets can be purchased via the Occidental Bookstore website at http://www.oxybookstore.com/shop_main.asp and by clicking on the "Performances" link.

    Breathe LA

BREATHE LA announces the new lineup for its 3rd annual Green Salon Series, focusing this year on the Green Streets of LA: how the Los Angeles community is taking on sustainable solutions as they relate to California's landmark legislation, AB 32 Global Warming Act. The series brings together journalists, elected officials and their staff, issue experts, policy analysts, thought leaders, neighborhood council members, and other community stakeholders.

Kicking off with an innovative discussion regarding digital media and AB32 in March, the 2010 Green Salon Series will examine issues that affect clean air and the environment from local neighborhoods all the way to Sacramento. Last year saw six successful salons, culminating in a thoughtful discussion with one the earliest and most vocal voices in environmental responsibility, actor and activist Ed Begley, Jr. This year's salons promise equally engaging panels. Each salon will be introduced by elected officials; issue experts and advocates will participate as panelists and responders; and the audience will be encouraged to conclude the salon with a robust Q&A session. Upcoming Dates for the 2010 Green Salon Series:
    • March 16 (9:00am) AB 32.0: Role of Digital Media & Short Film (@ California Endowment)
    • May 19 (7:00pm) Neighborhood Council Greening Initiatives (@ LA Valley College)
    • July 22 (9:00am) Greening the Ports 3: A Return to the Ports of Los Angeles & Long Beach (@ Port of Los Angeles)
    • Sept 16 (9:00am) The ABCs of Educational Greening Initiatives (@ California Endowment)
    • Oct 21 (9:00 am) Creating a Healthy World: Greening Hospitals (@ California Endowment)
