Greetings!
Spring is here, FINALLY! Did you know that spending just 20 minutes outside, without sunscreen, a couple of times a week on bright sunny days, is actually beneficial to your overall health? Vitamin D works together with calcium to strengthen our bones and prevent osteoporosis. But having adequate levels of vitamin D is important for so much more than just healthy bones. In fact, multiple sclerosis, high blood pressure, cancer, type 1 and 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and seasonal affective disorder are all associated with insufficient levels of vitamin D. Wild salmon and other fatty fish are a good source, but if you're like most Canadians you just don't eat it often enough. Most milk, some cereals and yogurts are fortified with vitamin D, but not enough to prevent deficiency. So, after the winter we've just suffered through, I think we'd better all run outside as soon as the sun is out and soak up some vitamin D pronto! If nothing else it will put you in a better mood! Strap on your bras and a good pair of shoes and go for a run, a walk or play a game of soccer, or whatever you enjoy doing outside! I know I can't wait to dust-off my golf clubs, put on my Enell (to keep the girls out of the way!) and go soak-up some vitamin D! |
