Size Does Matter!

In Canada, for the past two decades, assessments of fitness levels of Canadians have relied almost exclusively on the body mass index (BMI) because it can easily be calculated from height and weight. The BMI has shown that Canadian adults have become heavier over the past 25 years.

However, the BMI is only one indicator. A variety of other measures are also required to gain a more complete understanding of fitness levels associated with current and future risk of disease. These complementary measures e-newsletter logoare provided by the CHMS, in which survey respondents underwent body composition measurements and participated in fitness tests in mobile examination centres.

Among youth aged 15 to 19, the percentage whose waist circumference put them at an increased or high risk of health problems more than tripled.

Among adults, decreases in fitness levels over the same period were particularly pronounced for young adults aged 20 to 39.

Within this group, the percentage with a waist circumference that placed them at a high risk for health problems more than quadrupled. The proportions went from 5% to 21% among men, and from 6% to 31% among women.

During the 2007-to-2009 period, just under 38% of adults were at a healthy weight. About 1% were underweight, 37% were overweight and 24% were obese.

On the basis of their waist circumference, 31% of women and 21% of men aged 20 to 39 were considered to be at high risk for health problems. By the age of 60 to 69, the proportions were more than twice as high: 65% of women and 52% of men.

Ladies - let's strap on a good bra, lace up a good pair of shoes, grab you daughters and girlfriends and make exercising fun!

No matter  your size or activity, we have the right bra for you!

The Women's Sport Fair

Linda Craig Founder of Women's Sports Fair

The Women's Sport Fair came about because of me wanting to play women's

tackle football. I am heading into my 5th season and more excited than

ever! Over the last 4 seasons we have had so few women that I end up playing the entire game, both defense and offense. During our 2010 season I was wondering how to get more women to come out and just 'try' tackle football, but found it was a tough sell. Then I thought of the idea to invite women out to try a variety of team sports, sports they didn't know existed or perhaps never thought they could try.

So back in June of 2010 I met with NSD, the National Sport Development centre to see if they would like to host such an event. They weren't able to because of previous bookings and after a few other failed attempts I met with Cardel Place at the end of August and got the green light at the beginning of September.

Since then, I have gathered 8 team sports that are very excited to be a

part of this unique idea. It's unique because it's just for women and they get to try each and every sport, even more than once if they want!! The sports are: tackle football, rugby, field lacrosse, roller derby, touch football, ultimate Frisbee, field hockey and goalball, which is played by sight impaired/blind athletes -- but on Feb. 19 we all get to try it!! It's definitely harder than it looks.

I have also added a trade show section that promotes Active and Healthy Living to the entire family. So the 21 booths that will be on site will help everyone to Just Be Active in a safe and fun way. That is what this whole fair is about; Just Be Active!  You'll get lots of info, whether you're interested in playing a new team sport, or wanting to find out about rafting or renting a canoe. Learn a bit about easy to follow nutrition and ways to make sure your body is properly working for you!!

I will also be inviting a number of women athletes from a variety of games, such as the Olympics, Paralympics, PanAm, Commonwealth, past, present and future. So come on down and be super motivated to Just Be Active!!  It will be a ton of fun and it's totally FREE. Parking is FREE, too!!

Cooking B

Crockpot Chicken Barbecue

Ingredients:

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 1/2 cups tomato ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon ground red hot pepper flakes, or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Preparation:

Combine all ingredients for the sauce in the slow cooker. Add the chicken, try to coat it well with the sauce.

Cook on high 3-4 hours, or until chicken is fully cooked all the way through. Then shred or cut up the chicken, and put it back in the barbecue sauce in the pot; mix it all up so all the pieces are well coated.

You can keep the slow cooker on low to keep the chicken warm for serving on hard rolls.
