Essex Heritage & Hunt's Launch Photo Safaris

ENHA LogoPicture yourself surrounded by a stunning Northshore landscape with a state-of-the-art digital camera in hand. A great white egret soars over Plum Island. The sun sets over the Marblehead coastline. The past comes alive at the restored Saugus Iron Works. Now picture yourself capturing an award-winning image for this year's Essex Heritage Photo Contest. Far fetched? Not if you've registered for an Essex Heritage Photo Safari, register here.

Hats Off to Jim!
"You have always brought light to our local past by your dedicated research; inspired pride for our unique heritage by your enthusiasm; woven magic into our historic awareness with your storytelling. May you long be Salem's bard!" This is just one example of toasts to Jim McAllister submitted for the commemorative booklet to be distributed at the Essex Heritage Award Dinner (May 28th, Hawthorne Hotel in Salem). The booklet will be a unique collection of tributes to Jim and his memorable stories, with signed copies distributed to all the guests. Tickets may still be purchased here.
The Eagle Soars
Thanks to the efforts of Meridian Associates, Inc. in providing a 3-d cad schematic, the National Park Service Customs House eagle will be used to create a scaled replica for our new Heritage Hero Award. Reproduced in wood by a master carver, this scaled replica will be displayed in the Salem Visitor Center and include the names of all future Essex Heritage Hero award recipients.
And the Winner is...

Tom Leonard, President Emeritus, Essex National Heritage CommissionSpring certainly takes its time to arrive here in New England.  It appears that in 2008, we have had our usual share of damp and cool weather.  Hopefully the last couple of months of spring will be brighter and as the May flowers bloom, we will forget the dampness and chill of early April.  Some of those night Red Sox games in April when the east wind brought cool temperatures off the ocean seemed better suited for football than baseball.  When summer does arrive, we will all be so grateful for that east wind that arrives on the warm sultry days and we will forget all about early April and the cool temperatures. B2B Trail Reaches Design Milestone
With the recent issuance of a Request for Responses for engineering design services the long planned 28-mile
Border to Boston Trail reached an important milestone. The action by the Massachusetts Highway Department represents the culmination of a two-year effort by the Border to Boston Coalition, an ad hoc group composed of the eight B2B communities (Salisbury, Newburyport, Newbury, Georgetown, Boxford, Topsfield, Wenham, and Danvers), Essex Heritage, the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission, and the Metropolitan Area Planning Council.

Once under contract with MassHighway, the selected firm will develop the rail trail's "preliminary design" (0-25%), including its exact alignment and required environmental permitting documentation. The design is being paid for with federal funds secured by Congressman John Tierney and is expected to be completed by fall 2009.
