Raspberries

 Greetings,

Summer in Island County is as busy as it is beautiful. The cash crops are flourishing and the weeds are growing like crazy . Volunteers are needed too (see below). The state is looking for input on transportation issues and I want to be sure our ferry-dependent community is heard. As always I welcome your input.  Please  feel free to forward this message to others and call or email me any time.

Noxious Weeds Growing and Board has Openings

Welcome to Janet Stein who has come on board to manage the County's Noxious Weed program. One serious outbreak is around Bayview and Freeland with poison hemlock plants.  The plants are 6-8' tall, towering over blackberry and wild rose bushes. The flowers are white, light and airy clusters. The stems are smooth, hollow and covered with purple blotches and streaks. Leaves are fern like. Tansy ragwort will be on us next, that is the yellow flowered plant that blooms along the roadside in July. Farmers need help to keep this plant out of their hayfields. Animals don't normally eat the fresh green plant, but it will be eaten when it is included in a bale of hay and enough of it will slowly kill  a horse by destroying its liver over several months.

Poison hemlock is capable of killing people and animals quickly. If you know where it is growing, contact Janet Stein.   [email protected]

It helps if you can identify the parcel number of the location. I have heard there's quite a bit along Bayview Rd at six different locations between the Cash Store and Wheel Estates.

This important program is overseen by a volunteer board of citizens from around each area of the County. We have two openings and applications are due by July 18th. Please consider serving your community in this way.

Give your feedback on transportation

The Washington State Transportation Commission needs your help.  Please share your ideas on how to improve the State's transportation system. If you have opinions about how to improve transportation in Washington State you can now voice them publicly through theVoice of Washington State (VOWS) public feedback program. The Washington State Transportation Commission (WSTC) needs our input, so don't delay in sharing your opinions.
