 April 2012

 Greetings,

Spring is in the air and I am so happy to get out and enjoy the beauty of our islands.  There is a serious community health issue to bring to your attention,  a request for feedback information and also an appreciation.

As always I welcome your input.

Please  feel free to forward this message to others and call or email me any time.

Pertussis Epidemic in Washington State

Whooping Cough (Pertussis) in Washington State is reaching epidemic levels.  This can be fatal to young children. Please check with your health care provider about updating your vaccine.

The  Tdap booster vaccine is very important for everyone who will have contact with new infants, especially pregnant women, family members, and health care workers.

For your convenience, this is the link to the Department of Health fact sheet:  http://www.doh.wa.gov/EHSPHL/factsheet/pertussis.htm

Conservation Futures Feedback
At yesterday's work session it was suggested that the Board do some outreach to our community about the value of the Conservation Futures Program. For a bit of background, it is a local levy fund which was established about 20 years ago to provide for preservation of open space, forest and agricultural lands in Island County. It has been used to preserve the Greenbank Farm, the Outdoor Classroom and farmland in Ebey's Reserve, to name a few. About $700,000 is collected annually and the average property is assessed about $14/year to fund this program.  I welcome your feedback on this program.

Volunteer Recognition Week

April 15-21, 2012

Island County is honoring the many volunteers who make a positive impact on our islands. These are often unsung heroes who weave the rich fabric of our community and make our County  a desirable place to live.

Hundreds of community members voluntarily offer their time and talents to the various citizen committees advising the Commissioners in matters as varied as water resources, tourism promotion, affordable housing and community health.

Our islands are blessed with many local organizations that also depend upon the generous support of thousands of volunteer hours to support the social safety net for vulnerable citizens

The Island County Board of Commissioners appreciates the contributions of our local volunteers. They truly embody the spirit of our island communities.

It is an honor to serve you,
