Kennewick launch this Friday
Hooray! The final 64-car ferry is ready for service on the Port Townsend-Coupeville run. Washington State Ferries will host a christening of the Kennewick this Friday, January 6th from 11am - 1 pm in Pt. Townsend. It is open to the public and I will be attending this event to represent Island County. The three ferries in this series were recently recognized for their innovative design. They boast the fine craftsmanship of local employer, Nichols Brothers Boat Works.

County Counselors offer timely help
The end of 2011 brought great tragedy to the South Whidbey community. First a fiery high speed crash killed 3 young adults in November.
Then a 9 year old child was killed by a falling tree during a windstorm while traveling in a car with her family Christmas Day. I wish to also give recognition to the fine professionals from the Island County Human Services School Counseling Program who quickly made themselves available in response to the needs of grieving friends and school mates. Golf Cart Zone and Agriculture Comments Welcome
Agriculture is important in this county and is one of the fastest growing segments of our economy. Land use planning is vital to preserving this industry as well as protecting our fragile environment. A law suit with WEAN has held up the implementation of the County's Agricultural Critical Areas Ordinance. Before the Commissioners take action on how to proceed we wish to hear from you. A public hearing has been scheduled for January 17th at 4 pm in Coupeville to gain input on this issue.

Then on the agenda for the 23rd
is a countywide golf cart ordinance. This new rule would allow communities with roads of 35 mph or lower to petition for a golf cart zone designation. Increasing the mobility for some citizens as well as reducing our reliance on fossil fuels is at the root of this idea. Click here for a link to the information. Please feel free to offer comments by phone or email if attending the meetings is inconvenient for you. |
