DISTRICT 1 NEWS
August 2011

Greetings!

August is a busy month in our community. I hope you enjoy all our area has to offer during this glorious time of year. From the farm fresh produce to the community celebrations of art and culture, and rejuvenating walks on the beach, there is no better place to be than Island County in the summertime.

Be sure to share our local treasures with your out of town guests, especially those which highlight our rich history. Museums in Coupeville, Langley and  Oak Harbor each offer great displays of our colorful past. The Jacob Ebey House and Admiralty Head Lighthouse are surefire hits with visitors and locals alike.

Enjoy!

Citizen Access

Citizens need access to local government, and local government needs citizen participation to operate effectively. That is why the Board has taken progressive steps to enhance our practices since 2009 to improve in this area - we have held dozens of evening meetings over the past couple years, began posting our agendas with action item documents on our website, made audio recordings of our meetings available and now have installed a video camera so the public can view our proceedings from the comfort of their homes 24/7. You can find the archive files by following this link: Island County Commissioners' Website

This newsletter is one more step in bringing local government to your door. Please let me know if you would like to meet and discuss other ideas you may have to improve citizen engagement and awareness in our county.

Island County Employees
Make a Difference
According to rideshareonline.com, since the beginning of 2011 Island County employees who are taking transit, carpooling and/or using other modes of transportation have saved a staggering $43,846! Additionally we have prevented 64,838 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions from entering the atmosphere along with other pollutants. Each trip adds up to make a significant impact for the county as a whole. This shows how one person CAN make a difference, even by sharing a ride once a week.

It is an honor to serve you. Be sure to share this newsletter with others.

Please send me your suggestions and comments.

Sincerely,
