The CanSkate Connection
Would you like to run organized, lively CanSkate sessions? The solution is simple, choreograph your sessions with pre-timed playlists. Watching the clock and using an 'arena' voice is no longer needed to give signals or instructions - let the music be your guide!
Sample playlist for a 45 minute session:
8 minutes - warm-up songs
3 x 10 minute - lesson time songs (instrumental music works well)
2 x 1 minute - station rotation signals (when skaters go around the fast track)
| Mr. C The Slide Man - Cha-Cha Slide |
My favorite warm-up song is the Casper Slide (see right). More song suggestions can be found on the Skate Canada website for members.
September 2012 represents the soft launch of the new program, giving clubs 2 years to implement the changes. This month I strongly encourage coaches to take the time to educate themselves and slowly implement various aspects of the program, starting with the resources on the Skate Canada website and the required on-line training module. For a sneak preview of the components of the new CanSkate program in action, click here.
If you have questions or if your club would like assistance with implementation of the new CanSkate program, I can be reached at tammylg@shaw.ca.

CanSkate Tip
By: Doug Schmierer
If your CanSkate is in an arena with poor acoustics, I find it useful to coach without using your voice. Begin with hand claps waiting for the group to echo your hand claps. Once thier attention is gained, proceed by using other visual and auditory cues such as signs, pantamime, etc. Try it. It can be a useful tool to gain and maintain attention. |

Get In Sync
What is Synchronized Skating?
Synchronized Skating is a team sport made up of individual figure skaters. For a competitive synchronized skating team, success stems from the development of the skaters as individuals and as athletes, both on and off the ice. In accordance with the LTAD model - improvement of the individual in all athletic pursuits off the ice will complement their athletic development on the ice. Development is strengthened by skater's individual lessons with their private coaches at their home clubs, as well as involvement at an early age with other aspects of sport and wellness. Flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, musicality/dance, strength, and mental training are all areas that can enhance the figure skater for both team and singles skating. Consider trying Synchronized Skating!
For information on Synchronized Skating in our Section, please feel free to contact Section Office, or either of the Synchronized Skating Reps on the Skating Programs Committee: Kim Boorman kboorman@shaw.ca and Michele Rowein, mrowein@yahoo.ca. |

Don't take skating too seriously - When you fall down (and be sure you will), have a laugh about it and get right back up on your skates again. Don't take yourself or your skating too seriously, after all, even the best end up on their backs from time to time. It's even funnier if you do it in style!
