15th Annual Inclusion Awards a Big Success!

Our night in Paris, also known as the 15th Annual Inclusion Awards, was a great success! From the beautiful music of Celine La Coste and her band, to our fun-filled photo booth, everyone was in the mood for celebration.

It was all fancy dress at this year's Inclusion
Awards French themed photo booth.

Host Trent McClellan kept the audience of 400 in great spirits as awards were presented to well deserving people and organizations supporting inclusion in our city. The DDRC toastmasters did an outstanding job presenting awards with the support of Bonny Johannson, Krystal Blaikie, and Kyle Engleson.

After a delectable three course meal, winners of the silent auction, door prize draws and 50/50 were announced. Top bidders took home luxury items such as flower and chocolate bouquets, gift baskets, and jewelry. Our grand door prize draw sent one lucky guest home with an ipad2, and the DDRC received a generous donation from John Beckers, who kindly donated his 50/50 win! In all, guests' generosity raised just over $3000.00 for the DDRC!

New Client Workshops Inspire and Educate

This fall the DDRC launched a selection of new client workshops on multiple topics covering important life skills. Each workshop runs as a series over several weeks, giving organizers and clients the time to study topics in depth.

Participants are enthusiastic about the hands on, group environment as well as the new skills that they are learning. The topics of the workshops range from Building Relationships and Dressing for Success, to Employment, Current Events, and Money Skills.

Some particularly powerful workshops have been the Advocacy and Rights and Responsibilities series. Clients in the Rights and Responsibilities workshop learned about their rights as Canadian citizens as established in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Those participating in the Advocacy workshop wrote and addressed letters to the new Premier of Alberta, Alison Redford, congratulating her on her recent election, and explaining what they would like to see the government do for individuals with disabilities.

After completing an activity reviewing articles in the newspaper, Shawn, a participant in the Current Events series explains, "I like looking at the sports sections and seeing who is playing and who is playing well." Often, it is the variety of activities in the workshops that really get the message across: acting out the news headlines, "is fun, and helps you to remember things better," says Brad, another Current Events participant.

Bonny Johannson and Kyle Engleson, the organizers of the new workshops, want these series to become an ongoing part of the DDRC's service to our clients. These workshops provide opportunities to learn new skills, but Bonny recognizes that "it is important to have fun, too."

Clients and staff were all ears during our special Remembrance Day presentation. The DDRC was lucky to have guests Corporal Prebushewski and Master Corporal Pestell share their experiences in the Canadian Military, as well as highlight the history of Remembrance Day and what it represents.

Emotions ran high as we observed a video about the Highway of Heroes, a stretch of Ontario highway dedicated to the memory of fallen soldiers, where families and the community pay their respects to service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Audience members were full of enthusiasm and interesting questions for our speakers. A special thanks to our guest speakers for taking the time to shed more light on military life and Remembrance Day.
