Formica

Formica

Formica Corp. is expanding its 180fx series of residential laminate to include seven new designs that feature the look of stone slab and petrified wood. Offering a more affordable option for homeowners, the collection will include Breccia Paradiso, Travertine Silver, Soapstone Sequoia, Petrified Wood, Calacatta Marble, Black Fossilstone and Slate Sequoia.

The surfaces are available in a Honed finish with subtle surface textures that mimic brushed stone or Etchings, a polished finish etched with highlights from tiny fissures reminiscent of those found in granite and stone. The material is sold in 5-ft. spans.

A Shower Drain for Stylish Soapsuds

Soapsud Drain

Wave, a shower drain cover from California Faucets's new StyleDrain line, was created by Christine Miller Kelly, an artist and industrial designer in Palo Alto, Calif. Ms. Kelly, who was a student at California College of the Arts in San Francisco at the time, had two goals: "To mimic the rhythmic pattern that water makes in the ocean" in an abstract design with "a contemporary, geometric line," she said. And "to make sure that the opening wasn't so big that someone's toe gets stuck."

The drain cover, which is 5 1/4 inches square, has no visible screws (the company has a patent-pending method of attaching it to the drain below) and includes the entire assembly and drain body. It comes in more than 30 finishes, including satin nickel, above, for $299 to $380, depending on the finish. Information: (800) 822-8855 or calfaucets.com.

New Poll Looks at Homeowner Satisfaction and Remodeling
January 13, 2011  KBIS

Customer SatisfactionA few finishing touches won't cut it these days. A new consumer poll from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) revealed that 49 percent of homeowners consider outcome and design as the greatest determinant of project satisfaction.

"Today's homeowners are smarter and more strategic when it comes to remodeling their homes," said NARI National president-elect Michael Hydeck, MCR, CKBR, of Hydeck Design Build, Inc. "They want their design to cater perfectly to their lifestyles and how they intend to use the space."

The unstable economy may have a slight relation to the recent findings. A more practical attitude toward spending in the last few years has amplified the homeowner's involvement in each step of the remodeling process.

"To be successful as a remodeler today, you must have full transparency with your clients," Hydeck said. "That usually means open communication lines and joint decision making in every aspect of the job-budget, design, material selection, timeline and management."

This also reflects the long-term perspective most people have when it comes to their homes. "My clients remodel their home for the rest of their lives, they don't think of remodeling as a short-term investment," Hydeck said.

The breakdown of the poll results showed that 22 percent considered having their needs met as satisfactory and 20 percent noted accessibility and timeliness of the remodeler during the project as influential. Finishing on time and safety precautions and cleanliness of the remodel were much less significant with 4 and 6 percent respectively.

New 2011's Color of the Year Revealed
January 07, 2011

Pantone has announced PANTONE 18-2120 Honeysuckle as the color of the year for 2011. The vibrant reddish pink color was chosen for its encouraging and uplifting effect: a hue that can help meet the challenges of everyday life.

Honeysuckle"In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going-perfect to ward off the blues," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. "Honeysuckle derives its positive qualities from a powerful bond to its mother color red, the most physical, viscerally alive hue in the spectrum."

Honeysuckle is an eye-catching hue that works well for day and night in apparel, accessories and cosmetics. Interior spaces can be livened up with Honeysuckle patterned pillows, bedspreads, small appliances and tabletop accessories. Painting a wall in the hue will impart a dynamic burst of energy in the kitchen, hallway, bath or family room.

"The intensity of this festive reddish pink allures and engages," said Eiseman. "In fact, this color, not the sweet fragrance of the flower blossoms for which it was named, is what attracts hummingbirds to nectar. Honeysuckle may also bring a wave of nostalgia for its associated delicious scent reminiscent of the carefree days of spring and summer."
