A Word From Our Publisher
| When an illustrator sends us a package of paintings for a new book, we open it with almost holiday anticipation. Yes, we've seen samples of his or her work before, and we've gone back and forth with a penciled dummy of the page spreads. But there's nothing like opening the box, undoing the protective wrappings, and then revealing the finished paintings one by one. If the psychologists who share our rather cramped warren of offices don't have patients waiting on the hallway couches, we'll set up an impromptu art show, propping the paintings up in the order in which they'll appear in the book, and then gathering to look at them. Usually Audrey tries to read the story aloud to us as we move from one painting to the next, but she's always interrupted by "Ohhhhhhh" and "Look at the color in this one!" and "See how she got that just right?!" The story, which we've thinking about for months and months, is suddenly alive! --Jennifer Bunting

A Note About Blogs
| Bloggers have been a topic of much debate amongst the publishing world. It is hard to say what effect a good blog review will have in the promotion of an author or sales of a book. It's a guessing game and one that Tilbury House has been playing for quite some time. Every spring for the past few years our new children's books are sent out for review. This list of reviewers includes a wide variety of review publications, but also children's book bloggers. Some review requests result in excellent and insightful reviews that help promote our books to new audiences, but others go unanswered. So what's the problem? Once one of our books has been reviewed by a certain blog, we have established a relationship with the reviewer. This makes it easier to get new titles reviewed, but bloggers, just like traditional literary publications, can be selective. So while one blog might relish accepting your book about character education, the next might reject it because of personal taste. Perhaps the greatest achievement of book bloggers is that they can bring recognition to a book that has never been reviewed or to an imprint that is not very well known. It is easy to find 30 reviews of the latest best seller, but bloggers help bring less well known but important children's books to home schoolers, teachers, and guidance counselors. Bloggers love what they read and want to share it for the pure satisfaction of getting the news out there. Some of our favorite bloggers are Books that Heal Kids, Character Counts, Writing on the Sidewalk, and Read, Write, Repeat.
