Idea to Action

 - a newsletter for people who want to design the lives and  small business they really want

Issue 62

23 February 2012

 Greetings!  ,

The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education results will be out anytime now. After the primary school examresults announcement in December we had reports of suicides, with notes telling how the children were disappointed that they did not achieve the results their parents wanted.

It is right that our conversations with candidates be about personal responsibility for goals, and a plan to achieve those goals, with the support of parents and guardians. It is also right that part of that conversation be about loving them no matter what.

As you review your personal maintenance checklist with me today, think about the conversations you have with those who are in your care.

Regards,Jaki

PERSONAL MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST
Idea to Action quote: As long as a person is capable of self-renewal, they are alive - Henri Amiel.

Periodic check ups alert you to potential problems. You can then implement measures to deal with them. Here's a list to help you carry out your personal check up...

Breathing - I am aware of my breathing, and how different feelings and situations influence it. I can practice deep breathing at will to reenergise myself anywhere.

Conversations - I make time to  have the conversations I need to have with the people in my life. I am aware of the consequences of my conversations and I do my best to make them count in a positive way, for me and for the other.

Eating - I am aware of what constitutes a balanced diet. I know what I eat, and I select different foods in the right quantities. I understand what drives my eating and I can tell my state of mind from what and when I eat.

Exercise - I know my activity level and ensure I am physically active at least 30 minutes in a day.

Introspection - I am aware of how I am spending my life and every now and then I stop to reflect on the direction I am taking and what it means. I am at peace with the world and my God.

Learning - I see opportunities to learn in all situations. I can learn about myself or about others; the world and how I see it. I can learn to take a new path.

Recharging - I have a self care system in place that allows me to seize moments during my day to stop and recharge. I take regular breaks from my work to do something that I love and that re-energises me.

Sleep - I have a regular, comfortable sleep pattern. I do not depend on chemical substances to keep myself awake, or to put myself to sleep.

Success - I spend most of my resources on things that bring me meaning, contentment and balance. When I look back I see the progress I have made.

Values - I am aware of my needs, and the values that drive my choices. I am secure when I need to make trade-offs, knowing what values are at stake.

Vision - I know where I am going. Every day I do something to take me closer to that vision, and avoid things that would distract me. I acknowledge obstacles and find a way around them; they are not the end of the road.
