FACING FEAR

IDEA TO ACTION QUOTE  I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. - Nelson Mandela

Facing fearMany people don't get started on their goals or dreams because they are afraid to let go of their current known situation. We are creatures of comfort, prone to settle for what we have and what we are used to. It is also the case that there cannot be any real growth without stepping into new territory. Fear is a close companion of success.

In 'Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway' Susan Jeffers identifies 3 levels of fear:

Level 1 Fears permeate many areas of our life (Those that "Happen" - aging, becoming disabled, war, etc. and those that "Require Action" - changing careers, losing weight, flying, getting married, etc.)

Level 2 Fears have to do with our "inner state of mind" rather than our exterior situations - rejection, success, failure...sometimes these fears are brought on by traumatic events from the past.

Level 3 Fear: "I can't handle it!" At the bottom of every one of our fears is simply the fear that we can't handle whatever life may bring us.

Which fear are you feeling today? How can you deal with it? Here are some suggestions:

1. Acknowledge it. Fear is what is stopping you from moving forward, not the actual task.

2. Acknowledge where you are.Look at where you are in relation to the achievement of your goal. Where did you stop in the process? Once you know where you are, you can start to figure out what you have to do from now on.

3. Take one small step NOW. What one thing can you do today to move you forward? Do that one thing. Then do another one.

4. Enlist help. Read something about what you are experiencing, find someone who will motivate you...Just don't huddle alone in fear.

5. Realise that this, like many things in life, will pass. You just need to get through this period with the best possible conclusion.

6. Burn the boats. When success and failure are the only options you have no choice but to follow through.

Susan Jeffers proffers five truths about fear:

  1. Fear will never go away as long as you continue to grow.
  2. The only way to get rid of the fear of doing something is to go out and do it.
  3. The only way to feel better about yourself is to go out...and do it! Make deposits into your self-confidence account.
  4. Not only you are going to experience fear whenever you're on unfamiliar territory; everyone else will too.
  5. Pushing through the fear is less frightening than living with the underlying fear that comes from a feeling of helplessness.

OPPORTUNITIES IN TOUGH TIMES

Idea to Action quote:  Adversity is a fact of life. It can't be controlled. What we can control is how we react to it -  Unknown.

Hard timesTimes are tough but in that situation you can still find opportunities to make money, whether to supplement your budget or to meet your basic needs. Here are a few ideas:

Financial advisor.

When people have to tighten already tight belts, there is a need for guidance on the steps people can take to manage finances. Small business owners are looking for advice on how to deal with unexpected financial constraints. Families and individuals may be looking for advice on how to manage their finances given their new budget reality. Investors, particularly retirees, need help in protecting their nest eggs and finding any opportunities in a down market. If you have the knowledge and the right certification, this could be a windfall for you.

Food

People need to eat and drink no matter how bad the economy. Get a group of families in the court to cook their Githeri, in one large pot. The same can apply to traditional vegetables, sweet potatoes, cassava etc, uniform food that requires simply boiling or steaming. They pay for the food at cost and share costs of energy and you get a small fee for coordinating and overseeing.

Virtual Assistant.

The virtual assistant industry is growing as businesses reduce their costs and outsource basic functions. A virtual assistant (VA) is a highly skilled professional who serves as administrative assistant, except the communication and work are all done online. VAs provides administrative support and other specialized services to businesses, entrepreneurs, executives, and others who are unable to hire a full-time employee but need support. This can be a low-cost and recession resistant home business.

Trading Assistant.

During hard times, more and more people are looking to sell some of their unused and unwanted items at home to get some extra cash to pay bills. While many have heard of online auctions, or other trading sites such as www.buyandsell.co.ke, www.dealfish.co.ke, www.uzanunua.com, www.cars.co.ke, many in our region are not yet comfortable using online resources. Trading assistants photograph the items, write the descriptions, and create the listing online, as well as handle all aspects of the sale. You earn a commission based on the sale price of the items you sell.

Direct Sales.

You can sell anything from the comfort of your house by getting suppliers in touch with buyers and vice versa. You do not need to keep any stock, or collect any money. You earn a commission from the sale.

Tutoring

Even with a recession, education and learning are still high on the priorities of parents. Regardless of their financial situation, parents want their children to learn and succeed in school. To make it easier for people to afford you, offer a package for more than one child, that will cost each parent less than it costs to have individual one-on-one tutoring. It is even better if the children live in the same court, and so have no need to contend with transportation.

COACHING Q&A

Q&A

Q: Would life-coaching be useful for one who has wasted his early life and only now realizes the urgency of time?

Every day you grow and you can change. As long as you are willing to embrace change you can use a life coach. Life coaching is intended to increase your awareness and expand your possibilities for creating a more fulfilling life. The realisation of 'having wasted time' is already a step in the direction of awareness. What could follow is consciousness about options available to ensure the future is not wasted. A coach can help you identify these options and then create an action plan to move forward.

Life coaching is forwarding looking. It is never too late to ask, to receive and to take action.
