I hope you got some self care in during the Easter break.  Self care is one of several useful  attitudes for life and business success. And a small kindness can go a much longer way than you imagine!

SMALL ACT BIG RESULT

IDEA TO ACTION QUOTE I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again -  Stephan Grellet.

  I know I can

I recently read the story of a woman who started a business with 30/=. This woman was displaced during the 2007/2008 post election violence. A visiting pastor could only come up with 130/= when the woman begged for help to feed her 5 children. The woman shared part of her 'fortune', giving away 50/= and using another 50/= to cater for her immediate needs. The story implies the pastor was embarrassed to have so little to give, and look what it did! With the 30/= left over,   the woman bought flour, made porridge, and sold it at a profit. She vowed to herself that she would never beg again. The rest, they say, is history.  Three years later, the woman has bought a commercial plot and is planning to develop it.

This story reminds me of my mother's cousin M. M decided to break away from a bad relationship and return to her parents' village. On her way she stopped by Mum's house. Mum gave her 1000/= for fare and pocket money. She used this to start a business selling fish, and eventually paid her way to college!

These two women are remarkable in their determination to succeed from very humble beginnings.  They must have had a plan, a vision, and only needed an opportunity to open the way. The generosity of two people got them going because they were ready. The perfect ingredients were kindness and generosity on one hand coupled with the women's own intent and commitment.

There are many needs around you, and you cannot satisfy all these needs, even if you give everything you have. Still, you can do something, and if it meets with the right intent and commitment, the result could be BIG.

Looking at it another way, however much you give, or do, if the recipient of your kindness and generosity is not ready to turn the opportunity into something meaningful for themselves, you cannot do it for them.

ATTITUDES FOR BUSINESS SUCCESS

IDEA TO ACTION QUOTE

Entrepreneur attitude

Here are 15 attitudes for success in your business.

Have passion for your business

Your passion will help you overcome difficult moments and persuade people to work for you and want to do business with you. When it wanes, as it surely will in difficult times, take some quiet time for introspection and renewal.

Set an example of trustworthiness

Customers have confidence in trustworthy individuals and want integrity in their dealings with you.

Be flexible, except with core values

Your business needs flexibility in your strategies and plans to meet with changing challenges. However, no matter the pressure for immediate profits, do not compromise on core values.

Don't let fear of failure hold you back

Failure is an opportunity to learn.

 Make timely decisions
It's okay to use your intuition. Planning and thought are good, but procrastination leads to missed opportunity.

You are a major company asset

Take care of yourself. Your health is more valuable than the most expensive machinery or computer software for the company. You don't have to choose between your family or your company, play or work. Maintain your health for balance and energy, which will, in turn, enhance your mental outlook.

Keep your ego under control

Don't take profits and spend them on expensive toys to impress others. Build a war chest for unexpected needs or opportunities. This also means hearing out new ideas and suggestions no matter how crazy they sound.

Believe
You need to believe in yourself, in your company, and that you will be successful. This confidence is contagious with your employees, customers, stakeholders, suppliers and everyone you deal with.

Encourage and accept criticism graciously. Admit your mistakes.

You need to constantly work on convincing your employees that it's OK - even necessary -to state their honest opinions even it if conflicts with the boss's opinion.

Maintain a strong work ethic

Your employees will follow your lead. It will also help you beat your competition by outworking them, particularly when your product or service is very similar.

Rebound quickly from setbacks

Learn from the setbacks and move on. You can't change the past.

Periodically get out of your comfort zone to pursue something important

Many times you will feel uncomfortable in implementing a needed change in technology, people, mission, competing, etc. For the company and you to grow personally, you sometimes have to step out of your comfort zone.

Target
You are not all things to all people. Decide on your niche--narrow your focus and broaden your appeal.

Build a Team
Don't hire an employee to fill a position. Employ a person to be part of a team to build your business.

Be Consistent
Make sure your business has a consistent look and feel. A customer must get the same flavour from everyone within your organization. Always.
