GO THE DISTANCE |
Idea to Action quote: We first make our habits then our habits make us - John Dryden
You have taken some time out of the partying to think about 2011. You have found your focus. You have made a choice. You have your New Year's resolution. How long till you break it?
If you make resolutions only for the short term, you put in time and effort, but stop before you see any results. Then you begin to think 'it isn't working', and give up.
You have to hang in there long enough to see the results of your efforts. Go the distance.
Robin Sharma says you need 21 days of consistent behaviour to create a new habit. And while you are doing this, remember why it was you made that resolution in the first place. Keeping this picture in mind will help you keep moving when the going gets tough. Which is why you must have a compelling reason to do what you are doing in the first place. You must have a prize worthy of your effort, otherwise you are chasing the wrong dream.
3 things to remember if you want to stay long enough with your choice to see it work:
- Do it. Do it. Do it.
- Be accountable to yourself.
- Accept yourself, accept that you will make mistakes, forgive yourself, and then look to the finish line and go the distance.

WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS VISION? |
Whether you are just starting or have been in business for a while, it is good practice to have goals and targets geared towards fulfilling your vision for your business. While your vision is the dream, the big picture, the life of your business, your objectives break it down into manageable bits that you can accomplish on an annual, quarterly or even monthly basis.
Today Iask, what's your vision for your business?
If you are unsure what it is, here are some questions to help you define it:
- What's the name of your company?
- What type of business is it?
- What is the geographic scope of your business?
- Who is the ideal recipient (customer or client) of your service or product?
- What is your estimated or anticipated income per year for the next 1/2/3 years(specify the period)?

GRADUATION'S OVER, NOW WHAT? |
I used to think of December as the season for weddings. This holiday I reaslied it is also the season for graduations. So what are you doing, now that graduation's over, and the new year is here? It is very easy for the blues to set in, when you wake up to unstructured days with nothing to do. Keeping yourself occupied will help you maintain a positive attitude and could also prepare you for a great start to your career. Here are some things to consider:
- Keep busy as you wait for your dream job to come along. If you can volunteer in a job similar to or linked to what you would like to do eventually, that's good. Experience always counts for something at the interview. Even if it is not in the same area, speaking about what you have been doing is still more impressive than saying you have been doing nothing as you waitied. And you do not need to look far. Offer to help with family chores in exchange for some pocket money, or bake birthday cakes to sell in the hood, or sing at parties, or baby sit for the neighbour...there is something you can do so that you do not have to beg for handouts, or worse. - Write your CV. A well written CV is your first introduction to potential employers. Take time to prepare it. To know more about this, register for the Idea to Action workshop to be held on 5 Feb.
- Create a system for staying in touch with your classmates from univeristy. This should be a life long mission. Networks are incredibly powerful as you develop your career and/or business. Keep telephone numbers, email addresses and link up on social media.
