Idea to Action

 - a newletter for people who want to design their lives and small business

Forward to a Friend

Issue 7

25 November 2010

Greetings!

Who or what speaks for you?

How do you manage resources so your start up isn't impossible?

These are the two questions I am reflecting on in this week's issue.

Sincerely,

WHOSE VOICE IS IT?

 Authentic

I once got into trouble for telling a public officer that he had made a mistake. He wasn't going to take criticism from a 15 year old school girl.  I knew I was right,  I stood my ground and I got into trouble  for that. The moral of the story is, even when we are right, or believe we are right, we do not always communicate effectively.  Looking back, I laugh at my audacity.  I assumed the officer would see sense. I guess he assumed I would 'show my respect' for his authority by begging him to correct the mistake, or meekly accepting his action.  The problem is, that's not who I am.

So how do we use our authentic voice to communicate effectively?

In her book, Fierce Conversations,   Susan Scott says 'our work, our relationships and our lives succeed or fail one conversation at a time.'  Read more...

NOT ENOUGH RESOURCES TO START?

Tough decisions ahead

You're thinking of starting a business, but you are held back by lack of resources.  Here are 10 things you could do to maximize your resources and reduce start up costs.

1.       You can go pay-per-use with office space.  Today there are a number of organizations that allow you to pay a little sum of money every month for office space, including an address, which allows you access to workspace with computer with internet, whenever needed, as well as using the services of a receptionist and messenger.  You can hold meetings in corporate meeting rooms.  You don't have to rent a room and buy furniture computer etc.

2.       On stationery, no more need to stock piles of paper in the form of letter heads and receipt books. Go soft with a logo that you can use to create letter heads, receipts, invoices etc.  What's more, in this era of e-communication, you do not need to print out these documents as you will email them. Just be sure to back up your records. Read more...
