Hospital Response to Chemical Emergencies
The DelValle Institute is pleased to host two sessions of "Hospital Response to Chemical Emergencies" on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 in the Medical Intelligence Center. Session 1 will be held from 9:00am - 11:00am and Session 2 will be held from 1:00pm - 3:00pm.
A Massachusetts Department of Public Health Preparedness Initiative, this two hour program is designed for emergency medical professionals, health care providers, and laboratory staff who may provide patient care during a chemical emergency. Through lectures, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and easy to use reference manuals, the program provides an overview of public health response roles and procedures during a suspected or known chemical exposure event.
"Hospital Response to Chemical Emergencies" is sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Poison Control Center of MA & RI and funded by CDC Public Health Preparedness and Response for Bioterrorism. CME, CEU, and EMT accreditation will be provided.
Registration is free, but space may be limited. For more information on the program or instructions on registering, visit http://tinyurl.com/hospitalresponse
Formidable Footprint Exercise: Flood
The "Formidable Footprint" is a free series of national neighborhood tabletop exercises. It is designed to serve as an opportunity for community and faith based organizations along with governmental agencies to assess their capability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from a variety of natural disasters. The next exercise in the series, which will center on a flood scenario, will take place on October 27, 2012. For more information on the exercise, or to register, visit http://tinyurl.com/formidablefootprint
Disabilities: Emergency Preparedness Training
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1 in 5 Americans have a disability, and many more are at risk for developing or acquiring one in their lifetime through illness, injury, or aging. For these millions of Americans, emergencies can present significant challenges. The CDC's "Disabilities: Emergency Preparedness Training" page has an abundance of tips and resources that individuals with disabilities, their households, and first responders can use to safely and effectively plan for emergencies. Disaster Dozen: 12 Myths of Disaster Preparedness
Even with successful campaigns such as last month's National Preparedness Month, misconceptions surrounding the true nature of preparedness still exist. From the notion that insurance policies will take care of everything to believing that disasters will not occur in certain areas, these misconceptions, or myths, become some of the biggest obstacles to comprehensive individual and household preparedness.

CDC Social Media Tools, Guidelines, and Best Practices
Although there is an abundance of messages touting the importance of using social media to reach target audiences, successful application of these tools may often be difficult. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have developed a number of guidelines to provide critical information on lessons learned and best practices for the use of tools ranging from Facebook to Widget to YouTube. Although developed for the CDC, they provide useful information for other federal, state, and local agencies as well as private organizations. Focus on the DelValle Institute |
Matthew Matosic, Contractor
We are proud to welcome Matt Matosic as a contractor for the DelValle Institute. With years of CBRNE experience, Matt will be providing a wealth of knowledge as a subject matter expert. He will provide subject matter expertise to support classroom course development with other staff, as well as provide content for supplemental online training.
Matt comes to the Institute as a United States Army Certified HazMat technician. Assigned to the 1st Ranger Battalion, Matt's eight years of total active service have included deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2007, and in 2008 he was named the United States Army Chemical Corps Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year.
Among the many certifications he holds, Matt is Homeland Security Exercise & Evaluation (HSEEP) certified. This certification was especially useful in his last contract as the Homeland Security Training & Exercise Coordinator with the Boston Mayor's Office of Emergency Management.
When he isn't engrossed in CBRNE related materials or working on his thesis for his Master's in Emergency Management at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Matt enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoys traveling and being outdoors, whether it involves riding his Harley Davidson, running, or playing golf.
The DelValle Institute is excited to have Matt on board and is looking forward to working with him.
