Message from Mrs. Kunze Open House Please join us for Open House this Thursday, September 13th, at 6pm. You will travel your child's schedule and visit each teacher for 10mins. PLEASE consider carpooling with a neighbor to help with traffic. The back parking lot between us and Hickory Creek will be available as well as our back bus loop. Please check for a spot there before parking on Greenbriar Rd. The book fair will open at 5:30pm, if you want to come early and shop. Changes in Grading at Swiss Point As a part of Senate Bill 736 schools are supposed to be standards-based by 2014-2015. Here at Swiss Point, we are working hard to achieve this goal. You are going to see and hear a lot about standards, learning goals, summative assessments and formative assessments. Teachers are providing students with learning goals, so they can be more informed and responsible for what they should be learning. This year, our entire faculty is grading with an 80/20 weighting - 80% summative and 20% general (or it could be 10% general and 10% homework). In Standards-based grading, the main idea is that the grade is a measure of what students know or can do. It is not a measure of how well the students are obedient and it is not a measure of how much effort the students put into homework. What changes will you see? You will see your student tracking their progress on learning goals and more formative assessments that provide information to the student and teacher about where they are in their learning. When looking at Home Access Center, you are going to see fewer grades. Below are two great articles to help you understand more about standards-based grading. Article on Standards-based grading Article on Summative & Formative Assessments Jaguar Tickets Winn Dixie has donated tickets to the September 30th Jaguar game. We will draw the student names on Friday, September 14th. We will use the PTSO membership list for our pool. If you have not joined PTSO yet, please do so your child's name can be in the drawing. Bus Passes Bus passes will not be given this year due to several buses being at capacity. Fall Portraits Fall portraits will be taken Thursday & Friday, September 13th and 14th through Social Studies courses. This is the picture that will be in the yearbook and on the student ID.
