Friday November 19, 2010 the FDA asked the makers of Darvon and Darvocet  to pull the drugs off the market.  Used to treat mild to moderate pain, these drugs are used by millions of people each year. 

Darvon and Darvocet contain propoxyphene, an opioid first approved in 1957.This decision by the FDA comes after years of controversy regarding dangerous side effects of the drug.Data about heart toxicity dates back as far as an animal study conducted 30 years ago. The most recent study, prompted by a Citizen's Petition, provided compelling evidence that the risks associated with propoxyphene outweigh its limited benefits in treating pain.  Read Review of Propoxyphene

This FDA decision is based on data showing a risk of serious heart rhythm abnormalities associated with the use of propoxyphene, even in otherwise healthy people.
