Study Shows L-Carnitine is an Important Contributor to Cellular Energy Metabolism
The benefits of carnitine for extending life-span has
recently been reconfirmed in a well done European study. Centenarians are characterized by weakness,
decreasing mental health, impaired mobility, and poor endurance.
L-Carnitine is an important contributor to cellular energy
metabolism. This study sugg ests that
supplementation with the amino acid L-carnitine improves cognitive function and
reduces fatigue in seniors. Method: RCT on 66 centenarians ( > 100 yrs) who were suffering from fatigue after even
slight physical activity. They were randomized to either placebo or carnitine
(l-carnitine, levocarnitine 2 gm/day orally) for 6 months and followed up for a
further 6 months.
Results: Statistically significant improvements in the
active treatment group in relation to mental and physical fatigue (both p
<0.001) and walking distance (p < 0.001), and these were associated with
an increase in lean mass (p<0.01).
