 Sunday, August 7

  8am - 10 am PDT  ---  11am - 1pm EDT

Originally from Oxford, England, Andrew Wyatt has worked at the botanic gardens at Kew, University of Oxford and Chicago. This past spring, Andrew became vice president of horticulture at the esteemed Missouri Botanical Garden. Today he will be our learned guide through the garden's Climatron, a geodesic dome conservatory inspired by the designs of Buckminster Fuller and filled with more than 2,800 tropical rainforest plants as well as other specialty displays found at the St. Louis 79-acre botanical paradise.

As the granddaughter of Italian farmer immigrants whose last name meant, "to work with the tools of the earth," Denise Schreiber is appropriately recognized as the expert gardener "Mrs. Know-It-All," on Pittsburgh's radio show, The Organic Gardener. After a trip to the gardens of Great Britain, she began experimenting with edible flowers. This morning she will discuss how we can have our flowers and eat them too, based on her recently published book, Eat Your Roses...Pansies, Lavender and 49 other Delicious Edible Flowers. Call John, Sharon and Bryan with your gardening questions at 1-866-606-TALK (8255).

SUMMER VACATION LAWN CARE: THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT

By Sharon Asakawa

Whether by boat, plane, train or automobile, many of us plan on packing up and leaving for a week or more. Here are a few useful tips to help your lawn survive while you are away on vacation.

FOR 1 WEEK OR LESS

ˇ Don't worry be happy! Because if you are gone for 7 days or less, lawns grow slower in the summer months

ˇ Mow at the regular height and water deeply the day before you leave

FOR 2 WEEKS OR MORE

ˇ Set the mower down one notch and mow and water deeply the day before you leave

ˇ When you return, raise the mower two notches before cutting the grass (try not to take off more than 1/3 of the grass height at a time)

ˇ If your lawn goes dormant in hot, dry weather (this is a normal coping mechanism for lawns), water deeply when you return

ˇ If gone for more than 2 weeks, hire someone to cut your grass and water while away

DID YOU KNOW?

Scientists have discovered what real estate agents have always known - views are valuable. A pastoral setting with grassy, rolling hills interspersed with small clusters of trees are preferred by most cultures (compared to dense forests, deserts, mountains or coasts). According to researchers at Texas A & M University, humans have felt safe since the earliest times, when they were at verdant, open spaces, perhaps because of the easy accessibility to food and less danger from predators. Scientists Rachel and Stephen Kaplan have also found landscape preferences that include "mystery" places inviting exploration through a bend in a path or bushes obscuring another feature.
