Saturday, July 30
 8-9am PDT / 11am-Noon EDT
Years ago, deer were rarely seen where the Ecsedy family lived in Connecticut, but by 1988 deer began to appear and graze on lawns and gardens in their community. With a background in chemistry and biology, Bob Ecsedy put together a spray, now sold as Bobbex , to keep the deer away from the home landscape. The inventor's son Greg Ecsedy is now the president of Bobbex and he will explain how Bobbex helps plants grow and prevents deer, chipmunks, groundhogs, squirrels, voles and rabbits from eating your favorite plants. Call Sharon, John, Bryan or our guests with your questions at 1-866-606-TALK (8255).

Felder Rushing alternates gardening between his home in Mississippi and a cottage farm in rural Shropshire, England. He is the author or co-author of 16 gardening books as well as an urban horticulture specialist; columnist and host of a weekly call-in garden show, The Gestalt Gardener on NPR affiliate stations. Today, he will introduce us to his latest book, Slow Gardening: A

Steve GotoGototomato is the brainchild of Steve Goto, the Tomato King! For the past 30 years, he has been introducing heirloom tomatoes to the marketplace by giving lectures throughout the west coast and beyond. Today he will tell us about the wonders of tomatoes, organic growing techniques, soil care and much more not only for tomatoes, but also for other heirloom and unusual vegetables such as eggplants and peppers. And if you live in a mild-winter area, Steve will suggest some tomatoes that continue to bear fruit through the winter holidays Call Sharon, John, Bryan or our guests with your questions at 1-866-606-TALK (8255).

Did You Know?
The dog days of summer are from July 3 to August 11 and are named after Sirius, the Dog Star, in the constellation that shines brightest during this time, Canis Major. In ancient Greece and Rome, the people blamed the Dog Star for the heat, drought, sickness and discomfort.
For the ancient Egyptians, Sirius appeared just before the season of the Nile's flooding, so they used the star as a "watchdog" for that event. Since its rising also coincided with a time of extreme heat, the connection with hot, sultry weather was made for all time: "Dog Days bright and clear / indicate a happy year. / But when accompanied by rain, / for better times our hopes are vain."
