Quote of the Week

"If a person cannot love a plant after he has pruned it, then he has either done a poor job or is devoid of emotion."

The name "zucchini" came from Italian immigrants during the 1920s and 1930s and translated from Italian means small squash. Zucchini (Cucurbita pepo) belongs to the cucumber and melon family. Low in calories (15 calories per 100 grams of fresh zucchini), zucchini contains folate, potassium, vitamin A and manganese.

FIORI  DI  ZUCCA

    by Sharon Asakawa

One of the many pleasures I have working for GardenLife is the opportunity to connect with our listeners. Cyndi from Redding said that when she heard us raving about the zucchini, Costata Romanesco; she just had to grow it. It is an Italian heirloom summer squash with distinctive ribs, mild taste and huge male flowers suitable for stuffing and frying.

Not only does Cyndi love them, but also her once-zucchini-hating husband has turned into into a huge fan. Her lightly fried blossoms are so delicious that she almost wishes she could be alone to eat them all by herself! The following is her recipe and it is true, her rich and creamy fried squash blossoms are a libidinous gastronomic experience that should be called "fiori di amore."
