Quote of the Week

"If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder without any such gift from the fairies, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in"

                                                                               Rachel Carson

8-10 PDT, 11am-1pm EDT

Originally from Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire, Great Britain (and no, she is not related to Robin Hood or his band of merry men!), Ruth Clausen has worked for 50 years as a professional in the gardening world and has her master's degree in botany. She currently lives in New York and works as a freelance writer and editor for the consumer media and garden trade and has just published her book, 50 Beautiful Deer-Resistant Plants: The Prettiest Annuals, Perennials, Bulbs, and Shrubs that Deer Don't Eat, based on her many years of practical experiences.

Amy Carstensen was a Fulbright teaching scholar in Santiago, Chile, has worked in Mexico and Czechoslovakia and has taught high school Spanish for five years. She was also the International Community Foundation's director of operations for several years and we will find out why she accepted the position as executive director of Olivewood Gardens in 2010. She will be our guide through a series of magical edible and ornamental gardens as well as explain why Olivewood is such a special place for all - no matter what age or background. Call Sharon, John, Bryan or our guests with your questions at 1-866-606-TALK (8255).

DID YOU KNOW?

Although basil is cultivated practically worldwide, Egypt is the principal grower with the United States a close second. There are several basil varieties including Italian, Greek, Thai, lime, lemon, anise, cinnamon and clove basil. In Greek, basil is translated as royal or kingly. For Italians, basil is given as a token of love while in India, the basil plant is considered sacred and every Hindu believes a basil leaf is a passport to paradise.
