 Man-eating plant               befriends baby!

              ...scientists dumbfounded  !

Horticulturalists the world over are perplexed at a Man-eating Giant Malaysian Pitcher that has seemingly adopted 1 yr- old Brian Mayne from Boca Raton, Florida. Authorities discovered that baby Brian's parents had raised the plant to behemoth proportions with a mixture of outlawed steroids and growth hormones added to a steady diet of Wonder-Growth Plant Food..

" We never thought we were doing anything illegal", stated Dayna Mayne, the baby's well toned and green-thumbed mother. "We just like our plants big." The toddler's out-of-work father,a former curator of Disney's Jungle Cruise exhibit was unavailable for comment.

  World's Hottest Pepper!

Bhut Jolokia

SERIOUS HEAT! The Guinness

Book of Records confirmed in 2006

that Professor Paul Bosland of New Mexico State University had indeed discovered  the world's hottest chile pepper. Bhut Jolokia, at 1,001,304 Scoville Heat Units (the measure of

heat in a pepper) is nearly twice as

hot as Red Savina, the variety it replaces as the world's hottest. The Bhut Jolokia is a naturally-occurring interspecies hybrid from the Assam region of northeastern India, so the  color, shape, size and texture may

vary from plant to plant.

Toichi Domoto and Julius Nuccio: A Beautiful Friendship

By Sharon Asakawa

Three years ago, while strolling around Nuccio's Nursery, blossoms from the Camellia japonica Toichi Domoto literally took my breath away. Its large, ruffled pink petals with bold, deep rose-pink stripes shouted "you need me!" and I succumbed to its spectacular beauty. It wasn't until this winter, however, that Toichi Domoto's flower buds transformed themselves into the stunning open blossoms that had first attracted me to the plant years ago. I not only fell in love with Toichi Domoto, but I began to wonder who was Toichi Domoto and why was his name given to this cultivar?

DID YOU KNOW?

Spring has arrived at the border of Switzerland and Italy, especially on the slopes overlooking Lake Lugano. With the disappearance of the spaghetti weevil, responsible for the depredation of the spaghetti tree, it promises to be a bumper crop year. Unlike the vast spaghetti plantations in the Po Valley, the Swiss spaghetti farms remain small family enterprises. The uniform strand length is the result of years of patient hybridization. Freshly harvested strands are laid out to dry in the warm, Alpine sun and served fresh from the garden. You haven't lived until you've tasted homegrown spaghetti from the trees of Lugano. This was the BBC's idea of fun over 50 years ago. Check out the You Tube video Swiss Spaghetti Harvest 1957 for a perfect April Fools' Day joke.

Control Crane Fly Larvae in the Lawn
Crane FlyWhen you see them, you think you're on the set of a B-movie - something like "The Attack of the Giant Mosquitoes." After all, that's what European crane flies look like. The adults are harmless. It's the larvae that do all the damage. Sometimes called leatherjackets, these larvae hatch in the fall and live on grass blades until they go underground for the winter. In the spring, they're back out on the lawn. The adults are harmless, but the larvae are very tough on that new grass you just planted.
