Quote of the Week
"I have loved only Napolean and roses. There remain to me only two objects of profound hatred: the English, who overthrew my idol and the white worms that have destroyed my roses."

Janet DraperJanet Draper from Washington, D.C.'s Smithsonian Institution Horticulture Services Division is busily getting all the tropicals out of the garden and moving them into their winter greenhouse. She is also planting bulbs, winter annuals and will make some choice recommendations for our landscapes. And now that the weather is cooling down and fast approaching winter, garden expert Lance Walheim will give us a fall to-do list.

Curtis JonesCurtis Jones, owner of Botanical Interest Seed Co., will inspire us to ignore the cold weather outdoors by planting edibles indoors. Visit his online store at www.botanicalinterests.com for more seed information, garden notes and planting tips. Monster Gourde

Chris Stevens from New Richmond, Wisconsin grew this year's world record-breaking pumpkin. Weighing in at 1810.5 pounds, its circumference is 15 feet, stands 4.5 feet tall and contains enough pulp to make 900 pies! The behemoth gourd is on display at the New York Botanical Garden and on October 30, it will be carved into the world's largest jack-o'-lantern. Stevens estimates the price of each seed via internet auctions will probably sell for $750. Watch the video at www.tvsquad.com/tag/kelly+ripa/ to see the world's largest pumpkin make its television debut and go to www.nybg.org for information about the special Halloween event featuring this record-holder.
