Los Angeles Arboretum
By: Thérease Humpston

LA Arboreum Entrance

August 21st, 2010 was an especially beautiful day at the Los Angeles Arboretum in Arcadia, California. Jill Morganelli gave us a private tour of the gardens. If there is ever a round-up of passionate botanists, Jill would be one of the first-round picks. Her love of plants is deep, her enthusiasm contagious, and her smile is lovely, too! The California Philharmonic, led by the personable Maestro Victor Vener, charmed the audience with pieces from Disney's Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King, along with numbers from The Music Man, and that other music man, Ludwig van Beethoven. A wonderful evening was enjoyed by all.

Chrysanthemums are perennials that bloom in the late summer and fall. The Chinese used the plant as a flowering herb as early as the 15th century B.C. and in Japan, it is the official seal of the emperor. Pyrethroids are synthetic insecticides based on natural pyrethrums extracted from chrysanthemums that effectively attack the nervous systems of insects.
