Quote of the Week
"Gardening is about enjoying the smell of things growing in the soil, getting dirty without feeling guilty, and generally taking the time to soak up a little peace and serenity." ...Lindley Karstens _______________________________________

Sunday, August 8
8-10am PDT, 11am-1pm EDT
Jim Myers is a professor of vegetable breeding and genetics at Oregon State University where he specializes in the release and development of improved vegetable varieties with adaptation to the Pacific Northwest, of bush beans, snap peas, winter squash, corn and tomatoes. He'll tell us about cool season tomatoes and how to keep them fruiting until the first extended winter frost. Go to www.hort.oregonstate.edu for more great news about the latest in plants ideally suited for the conditions of the Pacific Northwest. And garden expert Lance Walheim will give us more timely ideas for fall vegetable planting and maintenance.
For the second hour, Greg Ecsedy from Bobbex will help us understand why we are seeing so many animals foraging in our urban gardens and what we can do to discourage them from damaging our landscapes. Check out www.bobbex.com for more information about repellents. Call John, Sharon, Bryan or our three guests with your questions at 1-866-606-TALK (8255).

| How to Divide and Plant Bearded Iris

Growers have recently hybridized a new strain known as remontant (re-blooming) that will flower in the Spring and again in mid-Summer to Fall.

| Did You Know?
|
The three erect petals of an iris flower are known as standards, the three lower petals that either hang down or flare out are called falls and the fuzzy-caterpillar-like form usually found at the base of the falls towards the center of the flower is the reason why the bearded iris is so named. |
