The race to develop a true blue rose would result in millions of dollars to the lucky hybridizer, but so far, the results continue to be in the disappointing lavender to mauve tints. Plant geneticists believe the key is to insert delphinidin, a blue pigment cloned from the petunia into the rose and at the same time, to switch off a rose gene that prevents the production of delphinidin. After years of collaborative research between Florigene and Suntory, their scientists believe they have cracked the code for creating blue roses and are refining the process until true blue roses will be a reality and not the stuff of dreams or fiction.
