Robert SchullerHappy 4th of July! Have you ever seen a kiwano or a dragon fruit at the grocery store and have no idea what they are? If so, there is a good chance they came from Melissa's World Variety Produce, a distributor of over 1,000 specialty fruits, vegetables and organic produce. Melissa's produce guru Bob Schueller will help us with our grocery shopping lists so that we can pick out the most exciting and tastiest fruits and vegetables available this time of year. And he will share his lemonade recipe from Melissa's Everyday Cooking with Organic Produce: A Guide to Easy-to-Make Dishes with Fresh Organic Fruits and Vegetables. Bob Reidmuller from Oasis Water Efficient Gardens will talk about adding a pink butterfly to our gardens, the 'Pink Butterfly' Kalanchoe.

Eugene RosowLooking for a movie with "heart and soil?" Eugene Rosow spent 8 years putting together, "Dirt, the Movie," a humorous, but extensive look into the history and current state of the living, organic matter beneath our feet. Eugene will give us all the "dirt" on Dirt! The Movie. And garden expert Lance Walheim will explain about the life cycle and controls of Japanese beetles. Call John, Sharon and Bryan with your questions at 1-866-606-TALK (1-866-606-8255).
Pre-order Winter Tomatoes Now!

Sub-Arctic Plenty
Sometimes billed as the "World's Earliest Tomato", Sub-Arctic Plenty is one of a series of extra-early tomatoes bred for extremely cold climates. It was first developed in the 1940's to provide the US Air Force stationed in Greenland with fresh tomatoes. Odds are if your climate is warmer than Greenland, this tomato should be successful in your area (but remember that all tomatoes freeze below 32°F). The dwarf determinate vines produce clusters of 2-1/2 oz. fruit with good flavor that can ripen 49 to 55 days after planting...another possible candidate for your Topsy Turvy.

Reserve cool season tomatoes, onions and artichoke for shipping the week of Aug. 9.

How to Build a String Trellis Frame

The tasty crunch of pole beans in the summer and snow or sugar snaps peas in the cooler months is the culinary reward for building this reusable string trellis frame. With a bit of effort and time, a bounty of peas, beans or other climbers await that are easy to spot and to harvest. At the end of the season, just cut off the string and remnants of the spent vine, roll it up and dispose in the compost pile. Our trellis is 10 years old and still works beautifully for my warm and cool-season "stringed" vegetables.

Did You Know?

The dog days of summer are from July 3 to August 11 and are named after Sirius, the Dog Star. Found in the constellation Canis Major, Sirius shines most brightly during this period. In ancient times, the Greeks and Romans believed Sirius was to blame for the discomfort of heat and the hardship of drought.

Brew your own SoilSoup Aerobic Compost Tea. Microbes are essential to productive soils and healthy plants.

Stop or limit the use of synthetic fertilizers! You can not begin repairing or enhancing your soil until you limit synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and other garden chemicals.

After just one or two treatments of SoilSoup your plants will start to look healthier; the lawn is greener, the flowers have bigger and more colorful blooms, the fruit and vegetables taste better, and the roses look great without any mildew! Pest issues will lessen as a healthier plant grown in healthy soil, has a stronger immune system.
