| | Saturday, June 26
8-9 PDT, 11am-Noon EDT
Whether you are a beginning or experienced gardener, you can avoid many of the trial-and-error pitfalls of creating a yard with year-round interest by listening to "The Perennial Diva," Stephanie Cohen from Collegeville, Pennsylvania and horticulture consultant Jennifer Benner from Roxbury, Connecticut. They have co-authored The Nonstop Garden: A Step-by-Step Guide to Smart Plant Choices and Four-Season Designs, incorporating diverse plant selections and easy design strategies. Closing out the first hour, Bob Reidmuller from Oasis Water Efficient Gardens will "...unlock this door with a key of imagination to a dimension of sight... and cross over into The Twilight Zone" of genetic mutants: crests and monstrose! Call John, Sharon and Bryan with your gardening questions at 1-866-606-TALK.
8-10 PDT, 11am-1pm EDT
Bees, wasps and ants! Oh my! Entomologist and author, Eric Grissel will enlighten us about the indispensable role of Hymenoptera in gardens: the predators, pollinators and recyclers. Get more information on his books, including his latest, Bees, Wasps, and Ants: The Indispensable Role of Hymenoptera in Gardens. And now that it is officially summer, are your roses suffering from the heat? Garden expert Lance Walheim comes to the rescue with advice about rose care.
For al fresco dining, Marta Teegen will inspire us to try her recipes featuring mouth-watering, warm-weather produce such as pole beans, watermelons, sweet corn and tomatoes. Her book, Homegrown: A Grower's Guide for Creating a Cook's Garden in Raised Beds, Containers, and Small Spaces is a must-have for anyone who wants to grow and cook their own produce. Here are some kernels of factoids.Behind wheat and rice, corn is the 3rd most important food crop in the world. It is also an important ingredient in alcohol, distilled spirits, corn syrup, sugar, cornstarch, synthetic fibers, plastics, wood resin, synthetic rubber, lubricating oils, corn cob pipes, abrasives, corn oil, margarine, saccharin, paints, soaps, linoleum and gasohol.
There are approximately 600 kernels of corn in each ear arranged in an even number of 14 to 16 rows with one strand of silk per kernel. About 27,000 kernels equals 1 bushel. After 6 hours of storage at room temperature, corn loses up to 40% of its sugar content.
