GardenLife's Sneak Peeks
This week's radio show
Saturday, June 12 8 - 9 am PDT 11am - Noon EDT
Photo by Cheryl Jordan | How does a person go from growing zero roses to over 5,000 rare, unusual and historically important roses and establish a mail order business in just 10 years? Cliff Orent, owner of EuroDesert Roses, will explain how he got started and also recommend some must-have roses. The one caveat is that his passion for roses is contagious! Another passionate plantsman, Bob Reidmuller from Oasis Water Efficient Gardens will explain about euphorbias versus cacti, their similarities and differences. Call John, Sharon and Bryan with your gardening questions at 1-866-606-TALK (1-866-606-8255).
Sunday, June 13 8 - 10am PDT 11am - 1pm EDT
Enter the fantasy world of Avatar's Pandora with Paul Isley, who will introduce us to Tillandsias, the botanical inspiration behind the magical flora of the Pandora rainforest. Paul also owns Rainforest Flora, Inc., the oldest U.S. Tillandsia nursery. Despite their exotic, seemingly fragile beauty, Paul will recommend Tillandsias that are suitable for home gardens and some ideal for indoors. Whether indoors or out, there is a place for a "Pandora" plant! Garden expert Lance Walheim will talk about how to gather seeds and pollen from herbs. In the second hour, André Viette will share news about his renowned farm, display gardens and nursery in Fisherville, Virginia nestled in the lovely Shenadoah Valley. Viette's Nurseries is famous for its perennials, especially daylily and hosta varieties, many hybridized and introduced by the Viette family. Check out www.inthegarden.com for his mail order business, plant selections and information about "In the Garden with the Viettes" radio show hosted by André and his son Mark (airs in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania). Call John, Sharon, Bryan or oany of our guests with your questions at 1-866-606-TALK (1-866-606-8255). |

With only a 3 hour travel time, there were no jet lag issues and it fulfilled the two other prerequisites: relaxation and fun!

Did You Know?
Some facts to "chew on" about William Wrigley Jr. At the age of 29, with a wife and child and $32, he started his own business in Chicago. In 1893 Wrigley's Spearmint gum was introduced, named after the founder and the common garden mint (Mentha spicata), known as spearmint because of the sharp, pointed leaves. By 1911 it became the most popular chewing gum in America and in 1915, he sent four free sticks of gum to every person listed in a U.S. phone book. During World War II, gum was give to soldiers as part of their emergency rations to help relieve tension and dry throats during long marches. But they also used the gum to patch tires, gas tanks, life rafts and parts of airplanes!
