Did You Know?
Crassulacean acid metabolism, abbreviated as CAM, refers to a complex carbon fixation pathway by which a plant's stomata open during the cool and more humid evening hours allowing carbon dioxide to be fixed and stored. And during the hot and dry daylight hours, the carbon dioxide is released while the stomata are closed. This reduces water loss and allows plants such as succulents and cacti to survive under arid conditions. CAM was first observed in the Crassulaceae family of succulents. |
