Gigantic Funflowers __________________________________________________________________
| Sunflowers and summer are synonymous and giant sunflowers put the fun in gardening. Use them as a temporary "living fence," a golden forest or fashion into a floriferous playhouse or teepee. And when the back of the seed head is brown, dry in an airy place, then scrape off the seeds and roast for a nutritious snack or provide a buffet for the local bird population. The following varieties are known for their towering stalks or platter-sized flower heads or both! READ MORE >>

Did You Know? __________________________________________________________________
| Heliotropism is the movement of either leaves or flowers in response to the direction of the sun over a 24-hour period. When sunflowers are still budded, they exhibit heliotropism. During sunrise, most sunflower buds face towards the east, but as the day progresses, they follow the sun from east to west, returning at night to the easterly direction. Once sunflowers begin to open, they no longer exhibit heliotropism. Most wild sunflowers do not turn toward the sun and their mature flowering heads can face many directions. |
