The vining Passion Flower (Passiflora) has been popular in gardens for centuries, but when the Spanish conquistadors landed in Mexico and Peru in the 16th century they saw in the Passion Flower more than just a lovely blossom. To the Spaniards, the corona (center of the flower) resembled the crown of thorns worn by Jesus Christ, the five stamens represented his crucifixion wounds and the total number of petals symbolized the 10 apostles (they excluded Judas the betrayer and Peter because he denied knowing Jesus). |
