Lawn Watering Guidelines

As the 2012 irrigation season begins, here are some recommended practices for conserving water while maintaining a healthy lawn:

Check your sprinkler timers to avoid excessive application at this time of year. Lawns need less water in the spring and cooler temperatures mean less evaporation is occurring. Also check sprinkler settings to avoid water run-off onto sidewalks and streets.

Avoid watering between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. when evaporation rates are highest.

Some zones may require less water than others, depending on soil condition, sun exposure and type of sprinkler head (stationary or rotating), so adjust watering as needed.

Try
"cycle & soak watering": due to the large amount of clay in local soils, water is not easily absorbed. The cycle & soak method can be an efficient irrigation strategy. Water 3 times for 4 minutes each time, with an hour between waterings; more moisture will be absorbed than if you watered for 12 continuous minutes.

ACCESS to WATER METER LIDS

As you begin springtime outdoor yard work, please keep in mind that water meter lids, usually located in front yards near the sidewalk, must be kept accessible and unobstructed by plants or other landscape material.  This helps our Utilities staff in taking timely & accurate meter readings.  Inaccurate or incomplete readings may result in estimates of your monthly water usage.  It is also vital that Utilities staff have access to the meter for any maintenance or repairs that may be necessary.

Be sure to clear all plantings & tall grasses within 1 ft. on either side of the meter lid, and remove any overhanging shrubs or branches within 2 ft. above the meter lid.

Our meter readers appreciate your cooperation.  Please contact the Utility Billing office at 720-304-6797 with any questions about your water bill.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Residents,

The Town of Superior will be hosting the Superior Morgul for the third straight year on a new date, May 18 - May 20.  The Town partnered with Boulder Racing and the event will have a new look, larger community festival, and two new race elements - Friday night Time Trail and the Morgul Citizen's Ride on Sunday.

This year's event weekend will kick-off with the new Friday night Time Trial along McCaslin Boulevard, followed by the Summit Criterium on Saturday and Morgul-Bismark Road Race on Sunday. In addition to the great racing, the 2012 Superior Morgul has partnered with the Rocky Mountain Bicycle Festival which will take place Saturday along Coalton Road, near Community Park and Sunday near the finish line just below Highway 128. The festival will include 50-60 cycling-oriented vendors and businesses that will be showing off new products, gear, safety equipment, and fun cycling tips. Similar to the first two years of the race there will also be food, beer gardens and kids' activities.

Another exciting addition to this year's event will be the Morgul Citizen's Ride. The ride will consist of one full lap on the closed 13.3 mile Morgul-Bismark course. Riders will take off from Community Park, ride the course, and finish on the "Wall" just like the top amateur and pro racers. Participants also receive a technical tee-shirt, food, beer, and ice cream. For those not wanting to take on the "Wall" there will be a family cruiser lap and kids race during the Summit Criterium on Saturday.

I hope you, your family and friends can participate in the 2012 Superior Morgul!

Go to www.SuperiorMorgul.com for more information or to register for the Morgul Citizen's Ride
.

Sincerely,

Andrew Muckle

CoCal USING PROPANE-POWERED MOWERS

CoCal Landscape, the Town's landscape maintenance contractor, is proud to announce their firm has taken a big step toward protecting our environment.  Over this winter the firm converted their fleet of more than 100 gas-powered mowers to new propane-powered John Deere mowers.  This investment reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 50% over the gas mowers, as well as reducing dependence on petroleum-based technology.  In addition, CoCal uses propane fuel that is produced locally.  This is a substantial step CoCal is taking toward achieving their goal of becoming a net zero environmental impact company.

CODE ENFORCEMENT CORNER

Each month, the Town includes information about issues and trends in the area of code enforcement.  During the month of April, 43 code violations were identified, primarily right-of-way obstructions such as basketball hoops, RV's, and trailers. Forty-one of these were promptly corrected, resulting in an 95% compliance rate.

This month, we want to remind residents of the regulation regarding the public disturbance by animals within the Town.

Sec. 7-2-30.  Public disturbance by animals.

(a)  It is unlawful for a person owning or keeping an animal to fail to prevent such such animal from disturbing the peace of any other person by loud, persistent and habitual barking, howling, yelping, mewing or making any other loud, persistent and habitual noise, whether the animal is on or off the owners premises.

Call Boulder County Animal Control 303-441-3626 for all animal complaints.

Upon witness of graffiti related activity within the Town, please contact the Boulder County Sheriffs Department at 303-441-4444. To report a graffiti sighting/location please contact the Town of Superior at 303-499-3675 or Ask Superior.

Questions regarding the Town's code enforcement program should be directed to our Code Enforcement Officer at Town Hall, Reggie Nettles, at 303-499-3675 ext. 165, or reggien@superiorcolorado.gov.

AT THE FIREHOUSE

Warm weather means grills, back yard BBQ's and warn evenings spent visiting with friends and families outdoors.  While using grills it is a good reminder to look at the wind forecast.  Ashes from charcoal grills can be picked up and carried into corners or dried vegetation and smolder into a fire.  Be careful with gas grills to ensure connections are tight and regularly check for leaks.  Placement of your grill is important; too close to a house or shrubbery and you can heat up the siding or bush and start a fire.  Ensure that hot embers and ashes don't fall onto combustibles like wood decks or dried grass.  Equally important is making sure you don't throw hot ashes into plastic trash cans; it can easily result in a fire.

If you are planning on using your outdoor chimnea or fire pit on private property be sure to follow safety guidelines.  Do not overload and overheat your commercially sold fire pit, follow manufacturer guidelines.  They need to be 10 feet from combustibles like the fence or bushes.  Placing one under the eave of the house is not a good idea as the heat will travel up and become trapped under the roof, preheating the wood soffit.  Also keeping the open fire 10 feet away from combustibles reduces the chance of an ember sparking out and catching something nearby on fire.  Open fires are not allowed on public lands unless they are in a town approved fire pit or grill.  For more code information, use the municipal code link on the Town's website.
