MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
| |
Dear Residents,
I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope your holidays were merry. This month I am focusing on a few of the Town accomplishments from 2011. Recognizing there are so many other accomplishments that occur throughout the year, I wanted to take the time to highlight just a few.
The Town of Superior prides itself on parks and recreation, this year Three Parks was completed, it is located between the Saddlebrooke Townhomes and the Horizons Apartment Complex. The amenities in this park include a disc golf course, mountain bike skills course and a dog park. In addition, several trail connections were completed, to include the Meadowlark connection to Boulder County and the trail connecting Christenson to the Coalton Trailhead. These trails will provide better access to the trail systems within the Town and Boulder County Open Space.
The Town is becoming greener every day by decreasing our energy usage. Phase II of the Photo Voltaic System solar panels were installed at the Water and Waste Water Treatment Plants. The details on the savings are outlined in this month's Sentinel. The commitment to a greener existence includes the staff and Town Board, in 2011 we stopped copying the Town Board packets and send them electronically.
Our Town Streets Replacement Program continued in full swing. The $2M project provided for ongoing street pavement management construction activities to include crack sealing, concrete and patch repair, seal coating, overlay, and reconstruction.
Other accomplishments this year include the library drop box installation at Town Hall; the holiday lighting coordination with Rock Creek HOA; the Rock Creek Parkway Underpass completion; and various other projects.
I look forward to the 2012 year and all the work we can accomplish together.
Sincerely,
Andrew Muckle

PHASE II SOLAR PANELS
|
The Town of Superior recently installed solar panels at the Water (99.84 kW system) and Wastewater (87.36 kW system) treatment plants. This is the second phase of solar panels installed at the both water plants, with the first phase of two systems being 99.75 kW systems.
PHASE II Solar Panel Systems at Water and Wastewater Plants
Wastewater Treatment Plant - Expansion
87.36 kW (PV System Size)
131,646 kWh (Annual PV System Production)
$347,012 (PV System Cost)
6% (Energy Offset)
$3.97/kWh (Economic Comparison)
Water Treatment Plant - Expansion
99.84 kW (PV System Size)
150,542 kWh (Annual PV System Production)
$396,821 (PV System Cost)
27% (Energy Offset)
$3.97/kWh (Economic Comparison)
The two solar panel ground mount expansion installations will generate an estimated 282,188 kWh of electrical power, offsetting more than eight percent (8%) of the Town's total electrical consumption.
Phase I Solar Panel Systems at the Water and Wastewater Plants are currently offsetting more than eight percent (8%) of the Town's total electrical consumption. Below is a summary of Phase I Solar Panel Systems at the Water and Wastewater Plants:
- Water Treatment Plant - System size - 99.75 KW, Annual system production - 142,927 kWh, Energy offset 25%
- Wastewater Treatment Plant - System size - 99.75 KW, Annual system production - 143,623 kWh, Energy offset 6%
The installation of Phase II solar systems at both plants will be offsetting 16% of the Town's total electric consumption and 12% at the Wastewater Treatment Plant and 52% at the Water Treatment Plant.
The project cost includes a monitoring system. This system will monitor the production of the two systems, which will be displayed through the Town's website and on the monitor currently located in Town Hall.

TOWN - HOA PARTNER FOR HOLIDAY LIGHTING
|

This year the holiday lighting at Town Hall and throughout Town is the result of a partnership between the Town and the Rock Creek HOA. By working together we were able to enhance the holiday lighting display throughout town. In addition, all of the holiday lights are 100%light-emitting diodes (LED) lights, which are up to 95% more energy efficient than traditional lights. We are already looking forward to next year and building on our successful partnership with the HOA and enhance the holiday lighting for next holiday season.

ATTENTION SUPERIOR CALL-N-RIDE RIDERS:

|
The Superior Call-n-Ride service will be eliminated on January 22, and 36 Commuting Solutions would like to help with other commute options. A vanpool could be a great option for Superior residents who are traveling to a common end destination.
A vanpool is a group of five to twelve people with similar commutes (consistent start time and destination) who share a van provided by a vanpool program. In exchange for a monthly fee, the vanpool program provides the vehicle and covers the cost of insurance, vehicle maintenance, and fuel. Vanpool monthly fares range from $61 to $160 per month based on one-way mileage and size of van.
If you are interested in joining a vanpool, please contact Audrey DeBarros with 36 Commuting Solutions by Clicking HERE or by calling 303-604-4383 with your work address, work hours, and if your work hours are flexible. We will assemble a list of interested candidates to determine if there are any potential vanpool groupings in Superior.

CODE ENFORCEMENT CORNER
| |
Each month, the Town includes information about issues and trends in the area of code enforcement. During the month of December, 111 code violations were identified, primarily right-of-way obstructions such as basketball hoops, RV's, and trailers. One-hundred and one of these were promptly corrected, resulting in an 91% compliance rate.
This month, we want to remind residents of the regulation regarding the Removal of Snow and Ice within the Town.
Sec. 11-1-20. Removal of Snow and Ice
(a) It is unlawful for an owner to allow snow, sleet, ice, dirt, debris or any other obstruction to remain on the sidewalk adjoining such land within the Town longer than twenty-four (24) hours from the time of the last accretion of such snow, ice, dirt, debris or other obstruction.
Upon witness of graffiti related activity within the Town, please contact the Boulder County Sheriffs Department at 303-441-4444. To report a graffiti sighting/location please contact the Town of Superior at 303-499-3675 or Ask Superior.
Questions regarding the Town's code enforcement program should be directed to our Code Enforcement Officer at Town Hall, Reggie Nettles, at 303-499-3675 ext. 165, or reggien@townofsuperior.com.

AT THE FIREHOUSE
|

|
The holiday season is over and while it is tempting to leave fresh cut trees, wreaths, and boughs in the house; DON'T. Please remove them from your home as soon as possible. Do not store them beside your home, but make arrangements to have them properly recycled. NIST performed several tests to demonstrate the flammability of a dried out cut Christmas tree and a well watered and maintained tree. The well watered and maintained tree is near impossible to ignite. The dried out tree ignites easily and burns rapidly. To watch the videos of these tests, please visit http://fire.nist.gov/tree_fire.htm . Town residents may recycle their tree at the Yard Waste Recycling Site at 2125 Honey Creek Lane until January 31st.
The cold has officially hit Superior and many homes have lit their gas fireplaces. Please do not place furniture next to the fireplace. Curtains, rugs, and the fabrics of couches and chairs can become overheated if the fireplace is touching the material and cause a fire. Ensure you have carbon monoxide detectors and the batteries are functioning. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer but the danger can be easily mitigated through the proper use of detectors which can be purchased a home improvement and supply stores like Target, Home Depot, Lowes, and Wal-Mart. Just like smoke detectors batteries in CO need to be checked and replaced semiannually. With simple care your gas fireplace can provide hours of enjoyment and warmth.
