NAME THE PARK CONTEST!
| Don't miss out on your opportunity to come up with a creative name for the Town's newest park area and facilities!
This summer the Town marked the completion of three new recreational amenities as part of a project referred to as the "3 Parks Project." This is the area near the intersection of Honey Creek Lane and Rock Creek Parkway between the Saddlebrooke and Horizons neighborhoods. This complex includes the Superior Bike Park, Superior Dog Park and Superior Disc Golf Course Park, and also includes Rock Creek Regional Trail, Rock Creek waterway and more than 30 acres of natural space. Now that the facility is open, it is time to come up with a fitting name for the area. If you haven't had a chance to visit the site yet, grab your bike or walking shoes and head over to check it out. The construction phase of this project has ended and it's time give it a name that captures just what this park area is - dozens of acres of largely undeveloped space traversed by the Rock Creek waterway that now has three separate amenities blended into the area offering recreational opportunities for a diverse range of ages and interests. Please note that the current construction work along the creek is to stabilize and improve the bank along this section of the waterway, and will include the installation of a pedestrian bridge. This work should be completed by November. The contest is open to all Superior residents and is based on the following parameters: - Participants are invited to submit via surveymonkey.com (CLICK HERE) a name idea with a brief explanation as to why it is the best name for this park facility.
- Entry ideas will be reviewed by the Town's Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Trail Advisory Committee (PROSTAC), who will choose the top 5 ideas and present these to the Board of Trustees for final selection.
- Finalists will receive gift cards to local businesses in the amounts of $50 (4 runner-ups) and $75 for the Winner.
- Please CLICK HERE to submit your entry, or mail to Town Hall, attn: PROS Department, 124 E. Coal Creek Drive, Superior, CO 80027.
Don't delay, entry deadline is Tuesday, September 20, 2011! |
NOTE FROM THE MAYOR
| |
Dear Residents,
On July 30th I had the pleasure of attending the Town hosted ceremony to dedicate the multipurpose field at Town 9 Park in remembrance of former Mayor John Kupfner. More than seventy-five people were in attendance, including John's wife Wanda, his children, several members of his family, along with members of the Superior Historical Commission, and as well as myself.
Mr. Kupfner served as Superior's Mayor from 1978 to 1986. He was a lifelong resident of Superior whose family is, indeed, interwoven into the fabric of our community. John was born and raised in Superior; he operated a business here for many years, and raised his family in a house located on 3rd Avenue, south of Coal Creek Drive. During his tenure as Mayor, the Town installed a modern sewer system, which was financed through a combination of grants, loans and user fees, and adopted formal zoning laws. Children's Park in Original Town was developed, and several dirt roads were paved for the first time. The Town was as important to him as he was to its history. An interpretive sign commemorating Mr. Kupfner's life can be found on the north side of Town 9 Park, just east of the playground along Sycamore Street.
Mayor Kupfner's legacy provides a great example on the value of civic participation and the impact one person can have on a community when they step up and get involved. I hope you'll consider one of the many opportunities the Superior community has to get involved, the many committees, Boards and Commissions, as well as volunteering for programs and projects.
I'll see you at the Chili Fest!
Sincerely,
Andrew Muckle

11th ANNUAL CHILI FEST to Support the Boulder County Incident Management Team
| |
September 10th, 3-7 p.m.
The 11th annual Chili Fest will be September 10th from 3:00-7:00 p.m. at Community Park. This year's event will include two great live bands, inflatables for kids, lots of booths and food, and plenty of chili samples to taste. Local favorite Hazel Miller Band will be joining us again, as will the exciting band Ironwood Rain. Please note that chili samples are generously provided by the cooks and are first come-first served. Get there early as the samples always go fast. The event will once again feature a Peoples-Choice competition between area restaurants and include last year's winner, Rocky Mountain Fire Department. The restaurants and fire department typically serve larger samples and have more chili available.

CHILI FEST SAMPLE TICKETS
| |
Saturday, September 10th
3-7 p.m. at Community Park
To maximize value, convenience and reduce waste from selling tickets, Chili Fest-goers pay $5 for a chili-sampling kit with six heat-resistant compostable tasting cups and a spoon inside - families pay $10 and get two kits of cups and spoons to share. This method allows us to avoid using up thousands of tickets for chili cooks to collect in exchange for individual samples. Also included are free soft drinks, and unlimited restaurant chili samples.
Please note that we have very limited ability to provide change, so please, no large bills. All money donated from ticket sales and beer goes directly to support the Boulder County Incident Management Team. The BCIMT coordinates with all local public safety agencies to respond to large-scale emergencies throughout Boulder County, including floods, wildfires, hazardous material spills, blizzards, and other significant events. Thank you for supporting this great team of dedicated public safety professionals!
Please contact Kristi or Dan Audette with questions at 303-544-0359 or email to Kristi at kristia@superiorcolorado.gov.

TOWN HALL GOES 24/7 WITH ASK SUPERIOR
| | It's easier than ever to contact the Town of Superior
Superior is about to make it easier for you to contact us with your requests, questions, and concerns. In September, we'll launch "Ask Superior", a new system that will allow you to contact us 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week in whatever way is most convenient - online or by contacting Town Hall by phone, fax, mail, or in person. Ask Superior is also available to iPhone and Android smart phone users by downloading a free application.
Ask Superior will make it seem as if there's a staff member on call around the clock to help you. If you prefer to make a request, comment, or question online, just click the Ask Superior logo on our home page www.superiorcolorado.gov; the system features simple pull-down menus and is a breeze to use. If you prefer to call, walk-in, fax, or mail your request during normal business our staff will enter it right into the Ask Superior system.
No matter which way you choose to contact us, you don't have to know which employee or department is responsible for a specific service - the system ensures the right person is contacted. And if you prefer to make your request or comment confidentially, you'll always have that option too.
Ask Superior will greatly improve the way the Town handles your requests by...
- Creating a unique tracking number for each request to easily track its status at any time.
- Automatically provides the status of your request and notifies you when the request has been completed.
- Allows you to contact the Town whenever it's most convenient for you.
We recognize that you may have questions about Ask Superior, and we believe that once you use the system, you'll see how intuitive and easy it is. In the meantime, just contact Jay Wolffarth or call 303-499-3675 if you'd like to discuss Ask Superior.

SIDEWALKS...GOT WATER?
| |
At this time of year, water running across Town sidewalks is often a sign of mis-directed discharge from residential sump pumps, or of landscape overwatering. This excess water causes damage to public sidewalks & streets, and can promote the growth of algae, posing a safety hazard for pedestrians. Section 11-1-40 of the Municipal Code makes it "...unlawful for an owner to allow or cause any drainage that creates a health or safety risk to the public on or over a sidewalk or parkway."
Some strategies for correcting the flow of water across sidewalks:
- Sump pump discharge should be directed away from sidewalks or neighboring properties. The Municipal Code allows for sump pump discharge to be diverted to the sanitary sewer system through minor plumbing modifications inside the home. Or, a sidewalk "chase" can be installed to allow water to safely pass through the sidewalk and into the gutter. These solutions require a permit & are the responsibility of the resident. They can be initiated with the Town Building Dept. at 303-381-2028.
- Sprinkler systems should be adjusted & monitored to ensure that sprinkler heads are properly aimed, eliminating overspray or runoff onto concrete & asphalt surfaces. And, sprinkler timing should be reduced, to apply only as much water as the lawn can absorb. For assistance with fine-tuning your sprinkler system, contact SlowTheFlowColorado by Clicking HERE to register for a free irrigation audit.

CODE ENFORCEMENT CORNER
| |
Each month, the Town includes information about issues and trends in the area of code enforcement. During the month of August, 42 code violations were identified, primarily right-of-way obstructions such as basketball hoops, RV's, and trailers. Forty of these were promptly corrected, resulting in an 95% compliance rate.
This month, we want to remind residents of the regulation regarding the obstruction of streets and sidewalks within the Town.
Sec. 10-2-20. Obstructing streets and sidewalks
(a) It is unlawful to obstruct, in any manner, any sidewalk, public highway, street or alley in the Town, or to place any object which causes or tends to cause the obstruction of any doorway, driveway or public sidewalk, street or alley or of any part thereof.
(b) All trash receptacles placed on any sidewalk, public highway, street or alley shall be placed out for collection no earlier than the day before collection and removed no later than 8:00 a.m. the day after collection.
Upon witness of graffiti related activity within the Town, please contact the Boulder County Sheriffs Department at 303-441-4444. To report a graffiti sighting/location please contact the Town of Superior at 303-499-3675.
Questions regarding the Town's code enforcement program should be directed to our Code Enforcement Officer at Town Hall, Reggie Nettles, at 303-499-3675 ext. 165, or reggien@townofsuperior.com.

REMINDERS REGARDING PARKING AROUND TOWN | |
The new school year is underway so are regular household and school routines - it may be a good time to remind everyone about parking in neighborhoods and near schools. Please be cognizant of pedestrians, cyclists, and avoiding blocking traffic or obstructing intersections when you are parking. In addition to not parking where official signs prohibit parking, it is unlawful to park too close to an intersection with a crosswalk, no closer than 20 feet, or a stop sign, no closer than 30 feet. Remember that it is unlawful to park on the opposite side of the road facing oncoming traffic. You can be ticketed for violating these provisions, $30 for parking too close to an intersection and $20 for parking facing oncoming traffic. Specifically:
Section 1204 (2)(a-f) of the Colorado Model Traffic Code, stopping, standing, or parking prohibited in specified places.
"...no person shall stand or park a vehicle, except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or in compliance with the directions of a police officer or an official traffic control device, in any of the following places:
(a) Within five feet of a public or private driveway;
(b) Within fifteen feet of a fire hydrant;
(c) Within twenty feet of a crosswalk at an intersection;
(d) Within thirty feet upon the approach to any flashing beacon or signal, stop sign, yield sign, or traffic control signal located at the side of a roadway;
(e) Within twenty feet of the driveway entrance to any fire station or, on the side of a street opposite the entrance to any fire station, within seventy-five feet of said entrance when property signposted;
(f) At any other place where official signs prohibit standing.
Section 1205 (1) Parking at curb or edge of roadway.
Except as otherwise provided in this section, every vehicle stopped or parked upon a two-way roadway shall be so stopped or parked with the right-hand wheels parallel to and within twelve inches of the right-hand curb or as close as practicable to the right edge of the right-hand shoulder.

SCHOOL'S BACK IN
| |
It's that time of year again for kids to start back to school. This means a lot of kids on foot and bicycle working their way to and from school. Due to the make up of Superior's school system there will be kids walking and biking through most of town, not just in the school zones. I would ask everyone to please be extra cautious during the early morning and afternoons during those times when the kids are out.
A reminder that the school zone runs from the first "School Zone" sign to the "End of School Zone" sign, not just past the school. All traffic offenses that occur in a school zone carry a doubled minimum fine.
Please drive safe and watch for kids.
