WATER CONSERVATION - A Plan for the Future

Did you know:
Only 1% of the Earth's water is suitable for drinking?
Generally, we drink very little of our drinking water. Less than one percent of treated water is actually consumed...the rest goes on lawns, in washing machines and down toilets and other drains?
Reducing the demand for water also reduces the energy & expense involved in producing it & pumping it to our homes?
Here in the Rocky Mountain West, population & economic growth tend to outpace the growth of available water supplies. And, periodic droughts remind us that we live in a semi-arid climate & that water is a limited natural resource. Water conservation is not simply a response to drought, but rather a tool in long-term water planning.
In this effort, with funding from the Colorado Water Conservation Board, the Town of Superior has drafted a Water Conservation Plan, detailing multiple strategies for ensuring the responsible & efficient use of our available water now & in the future. Specifically, the Plan:
Summarizes the Town's current water supply & usage,
Estimates future usage levels,
Identifies future water conservation measures & programs,
Recommends a sequence for the Plan's implementation.
The process of creating the Plan involves the opportunity for public review & input. A pdf of the full Draft Water Conservation Plan is now available on the Town of Superior website & a hard copy is available for review at Town Hall. Residents are invited to submit their public comments about the Plan in writing to the Department of Public Works & Utilities, 124 E. Coal Creek Dr., Superior, CO 80027 by July 8, 2011. Comments will be consolidated & evaluated for inclusion in the Final Plan document.

SUMMERTIME CONCERNS

Animal Complaints
Summertime has arrived and with it come changes in outdoor activities. One of the more frequent complaints that we receive is that of animal/pet violations. These include dogs off lease and pet owners not picking up after their dogs.
As a reminder, the Town of Superior has a fairly strict leash law. Unless on private property with permission of the property owner, all dogs must be on a leash at all times. This includes while on the hiking trails and in the parks areas. The ordinance does not allow for "voice control" of your dog.
An increasing complaint that we are receiving is that of people not "picking up" after their dogs. The Town of Superior does have an ordinance that requires the animal owner to "remove from any public or private property animal feces deposited by such animal."
Due to the increase in these complaints, the Town has requested that the Sheriff's Office provide additional animal control patrols for the specific purpose of enforcing these ordinances. These patrols have already begun and will continue at least through the summer. It is my hope that this friendly reminder will encourage people to be good neighbors and take care of their animals with regards to others.
Curfew
A reminder to parents and kids alike, that the Town of Superior does have the following curfew:
For kids under the age of 16
10:30 pm to 5:00 am on Sundays through Thursdays.
11:30 pm to 5:00 am on Fridays and Saturdays.
For kids 16 and 17 years old Midnight to 5:00 am any night.
As always, any questions please feel free to contact me.

CODE ENFORCEMENT CORNER

Each month, the Town includes information about issues and trends in the area of code enforcement. During the month of May, 59 code violations were identified, primarily right-of-way obstructions such as basketball hoops, RV's, and trailers. Fifty-five of these were promptly corrected, resulting in an 93% compliance rate.
This month, we want to remind residents of the regulation regarding obstructing streets and sidewalks within the Town.
Sec. 10-2-20. Obstructing streets and sidewalks
(a) It is unlawful to obstruct, in any manner, any sidewalk, public highway, street or alley in the Town, or to place any object which causes or tends to cause the obstruction of any doorway, driveway or public sidewalk, street or alley or of any part thereof.
(b) All trash receptacles placed on any sidewalk, public highway, street or alley shall be placed out for collection no earlier than the day before collection and removed no later than 8:00 a.m. the day after collection.
Upon witness of graffiti related activity within the Town, please contact the Boulder County Sheriffs Department at 303-441-4444. To report a graffiti sighting/location please contact the Town of Superior at 303-499-3675.
Questions regarding the Town's code enforcement program should be directed to our Code Enforcement Officer at Town Hall, Reggie Nettles, at 303-499-3675 ext. 165, or reggien@townofsuperior.com.
