Get the Dirt...Call Before You Dig!

Planting a tree?  Rototilling a garden?  Installing sprinklers?  Warm weather brings the prospect of many outdoor projects around the home.  Before any work can begin, it's important to have underground utility lines located and marked, to prevent injury to people and to avoid damage to utilities.  Any project that involves excavation or the moving/removal of earth with tools or equipment requires one easy call...just dial 811 to be connected to the Utility Notification Center of Colorado.  A customer representative will ask for information about where, when & the type of work to be done, and will make arrangements for all utilities to be marked within 72 hours.  You may also request utility locates by using the Center's website by  Clicking HERE.

Marks may be in the form of flags or paint.  Once they are made, you can then safely dig, avoiding the marks.  Particular care should be taken when planting trees, to avoid positioning them where root growth could impact utility lines in future years.

NOTE FROM THE MAYOR

3 Parks Volunteers

Dear Residents,

Construction at Community Park East/3 Parks is nearly complete (watch for details on a grand opening celebration in an upcoming issue of the Sentinel).  The Disc Golf Course was installed last summer and the Bicycle Park was constructed last month.  The Dog Park should be completed over coming weeks.  This is a great new amenity for the Town of Superior and I encourage residents to enjoy this new park (located between the Saddlebrooke and Horizons neighborhoods at Rock Creek Parkway and Honey Creek Lane).

I want to thank all the volunteers who have worked so hard to make this fantastic new park facility possible.  Eagle Scout Austin Jensen lead a project team that helped build the Disc Golf Course.  Eagle Scout Martin Benz lead a project team that set over 100 fence posts at the Dog Park.  The Town conducted "Community Dig Days" last month at the Bicycle Park and more than 150 volunteers came out over two weekends to work-- dig, shape, rake, tamp, push wheelbarrows loaded with dirt and cobble, and try out this great new amenity in Town.

Without the amazing efforts of these volunteers this park would not be what it is today.  It is wonderful to see that we have residents willing to donate their time to help build something for our community.  I want to express my gratitude to these volunteers for helping make Superior a great place.

Sincerely,

Andrew Muckle

WATER-WISE GARDENING WORKSHOP

Gardening graphic

Saturday, April 23 at 3:00 p.m.

Would you like to spend less time mowing, save water, and enjoy a beautiful, easy-care, green landscape?  Then Xeriscaping is for you!

Xeriscaping is all about using hardy, dry-climate plants to achieve a beautiful, low-maintenance, sustainable landscape.  Xeric plants have many benefits.  They need little or no water other than seasonal rainfall, they don't require fertilizers or special soil amendments, and they thrive in our climate without special care.

There are many misconceptions about Xeriscaping.  Some people confuse "Xeri" with "Zero", and think Xeriscaping means barren yards full of gravel and cactus.  But nothing could be further from the truth!  The selection of attractive  Xeric plants that do well in our climate is truly amazing.  Visit the new Xeriscape pages  on the Town of Superior website to see pictures  of some of the beautiful Xeric gardens that homeowners have created in Superior and other locations along the Front Range.

You don't have to give up your lawn to go Xeric.  There are attractive Xeric grasses to choose from that will save water and fertilizer, and require less frequent mowing.  The new Xeriscape pages  also include tips on how to minimize water use with your existing lawn. Once you see the stunning results you can achieve through Xeriscaping, you may be inspired to replace part of your current water-hogging lawn with more sustainable plants and flowers.

It is easy to start enjoying the benefits of Xeriscaping.  Pick a small area to begin with, learn what you like, and grow from here.  There are many excellent books and other resources that can help you plan your new Xeric garden and select plants that will thrive in our local climate.  Visit the Xeriscape pages for suggested plant lists, local nurseries that carry Xeric plants, and other resources.

Want to learn more?  Come to the FREE Xeriscape Workshop sponsored by Superior's Recycling & Conservation Advisory Committee (RCAC).  The workshop will be held on Saturday, April 23rd from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at Superior Town Hall.  Diane Badertscher of Harlequin's Gardens will be leading the workshop.  Diane has a degree in Horticulture with honors, and is a Certified Colorado Nursery Professional.  The workshop will include an overview of Xeric principles, guidance on plant selection, and tips for getting started.  Bring your questions!

ACCESS TO WATER METER LIDS

As you begin springtime outdoor yard work, please keep in mind that water meter lids, usually located in front yards near the sidewalk, must be kept accessible and unobstructed by plants or other landscape material.  This helps our Utilities staff in taking timely & accurate meter readings.  Inaccurate or incomplete readings may result in estimates of your monthly water usage.  It is also vital that Utilities staff have access to the meter for any maintenance or repairs that may be necessary.

Be sure to clear all plantings & tall grasses within 1 ft. on either side of the meter lid, and remove any overhanging shrubs or branches within 2 ft. above the meter lid.

Our meter readers appreciate your cooperation.  Please contact the Utility Billing office at 720-304-6797 with any questions about your water bill.

EMERGENCY WARNING SIRENS
to be tested beginning APRIL 4th

Warning siren graphic

Boulder County, Colo. - Boulder County and the City of Boulder will begin testing of the countywide emergency sirens at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 4. The test is the first of the annual season of monthly emergency siren tests, which take place on the first Monday of each month from April through August.

The siren tests will occur twice on each testing day, at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., on April 4, May 2, June 6, July 4 and August 1.

Siren tests ensure that all systems and procedures are working properly during the season of peak flood danger. The tests also promote public awareness of the warning sirens located throughout Boulder County.

Should Boulder County experience severe weather during a one of the planned audible tests, the siren tests for that day may be cancelled. For updated information, visit www.BoulderOEM.com.

Residents are encouraged to review their own emergency preparedness plans and discuss what they would do in the event of a flash flood or other emergency. For more information about personal preparedness, visit www.readycolorado.com .

About the countywide alert system

Used to alert residents to potential danger from a flood or other immediate threat, there are more than 30 outdoor warning sirens in place across Boulder County, including in Boulder, Erie, Jamestown, Lafayette, Longmont, Louisville (does not do audible testing), Lyons, Marshall, Eldorado Springs and the University of Colorado at Boulder.

"WARBIRD RECOVERY and SPIRIT OF FLIGHT CENTER"

WWII fighter plane

The Superior Historical Commission's Spring Program for 2011

"Warbird Recovery and the Sprit of Flight Center" is the unusual and fascinating subject of the Superior Historical Commission's Program for 2011. Come hear Gordon R. Page tell the story of recovering a rare World War II German Messerschmitt fighter plane from a lake in Russia. A major component of Mr. Page's story is his dealings, out of necessity, with the Russian Mafia and the KGB in his pursuit of this aircraft in the 1990's. The program will consist of a power point slide show and Page's first-hand narration along with information on the Spirit of Flight Center in Erie, Colorado. Gordon Page has been active in Colorado Aviation since childhood, is president of the Colorado Aviation Historical Society, helped to open the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame and established a museum known as the Spirit of Flight Center in Erie, Colorado. The story of his quest for the German fighter is told in the book Warbird Recovery - The Hunt for a Rare WWII Plane in Siberia, Russia.

April 14, 2011, 7:00 p.m. at Superior Town Hall

CODE ENFORCEMENT CORNER

Each month, the Town includes information about issues and trends in the area of code enforcement.  During the month of March, 40 code violations were identified, primarily right-of-way obstructions such as basketball hoops, RV's, and trailers. Thirty-eight of these were promptly corrected, resulting in an 95% compliance rate.

This month, we want to remind residents of the regulation regarding obstructing streets and sidewalks within the Town.

Sec. 10-2-20.  Obstructing streets and sidewalks

(a)  It is unlawful to obstruct, in any manner, any sidewalk, public highway, street or alley in the Town, or to place any object which causes or tends to cause the obstruction of any doorway, driveway or public sidewalk, street or alley or of any part thereof.

(b)  All trash receptacles placed on any sidewalk, public highway, street or alley shall be placed out for collection no earlier than the day before collection and removed no later than 8:00 a.m. the day after collection.

Upon witness of graffiti related activity within the Town, please contact the Boulder County Sheriffs Department at 303-441-4444. To report a graffiti sighting/location please contact the Town of Superior at 303-499-3675.

Questions regarding the Town's code enforcement program should be directed to our Code Enforcement Officer at Town Hall, Reggie Nettles, at 303-499-3675 ext. 165, or reggien@townofsuperior.com.
